Mannequin design (old)

This old drawing shows a design for a wooden mannequin. I remember I saw an old mannequin from the Renaissance in a documentary somewhere and I thought it was wonderful. So I decided to make my own version. In hindsight way too ambitious for me at the time. Carving something this complicated in wood wasn't in my skillset (it still isn't) so only these drawings remain.

Two portraits.

Even though I've posted the two portraits earlier, the one which depicts the woman is now posted in a finished state; I've done some retouching and glazing. The second one is rephotographed. It's generally very difficult to photograph paintings accurately enough, so it will be more like how it will be when you'd experience them in real life. It's safe to say it took a long time for me to learn oil painting. Only this year I feel like I'm beginning to understand it properly. Finally, after about 5 years of failed attempts!

Various tests and other material.

A continuation of my previous post concerning the short film project based on my dream. What you see here is not everything I have made, but some of the more important stuff like the astronaut character and some snippets of animation. The earliest work you see is from 2021, which were only drawings. Around 2022 this project definitely got a bit out of hand. The puppets, models, sets, costumes and animation tests were a lot of work but in hindsight fun to do. I forgot to mention that I got really inspired by Weimar era silent films.

Calotype experiments.

These are among my first calotypes from a few years ago. I remember I found a book which briefly featured Hill & Adamson (my favourite photographers) somewhere in 2019, I didn’t know what the process of calotyping was at all, but I was definitely intrigued by the ‘grainy’ look and age of the photos. A few years later I bought a book on the process and kept a logbook which I used extensively. The photos you see here are the result of me learning the craft, so the composition pictured isn't very interesting. I’m glad to say after 3 attempts of capturing an image it had worked out eventually! The sheer excitement of developing a latent image never gets old. Anyway, after some contemplating I decided to share these. You see the digital positives, the negatives and a salt print (photo is from 2023)

Some stills, some testing.

I once woke up from a dream and I immediately wrote it down. It spawned a whole short film project. It's called "The Ear Crawler" originally, because the astronaut climbs through the ear of a mummified giant on the dusty planet surface. I made the ear, as well as many other props/models through the last 4 years. I hope to share the whole story one day. Alas, this has to do for now!

Various photographs.

A few people here asked if I would post some photographs, so here it is! The camera is made by my father and was meant for the Calotype process. The photographs you see here are all made on commercially available gelatin silver paper. I'm glad to say I made a bunch of succesful Calotypes 3 years ago! Anyhow, these were all originally negatives. I made a few contact prints later on to turn them into positives, but the ones you see here are all digitally inverted.

Drypoint portrait.

The print you see here actually was a mistake: When I did this exercise over a year ago I somehow forgot to polish the plate, which resulted in a really hazy surface while I inked it. This wasn't supposed to happen, but I think I like the effect of this haziness. Zinc generally isn't the most ideal surface to make a drypoint on, but I had enough plates scattered around to at least try it again. I just need to remind myself to polish before I start!

I made this animation on paper in 2022, and rephotographed it in 2024.

Tronie (wip)

This is actually a painting I was working on some months ago, I have yet to finish it properly. The reason I made this is to study the colour changes essentially, definitely a lot of fun. It also has been quite some time since I posted anything, so this will have to do for now. I've reached a bit of a dead end with my art stuff for a while. I am sure I'll be able to pick it up soon enough, because I miss it.

Concept art.

This sketch is actually made for a project of mine. I didn't really have anything else to post, so this will have to do. I based his looks on a drawing by Howard Brodie.
