Thrilled to announce the sale of my next project: UPROOTED, my first book of narrative nonfiction. I started #foraging during the early days of the pandemic, a practice that brings me much joy and continues to help me—and my family— find our way in chaotic times. I started writing El Nido in the spring of 2021, exhilarated and terrified by its scope and ambition. Some days, I questioned if I could pull it off, but I kept going. I’m thrilled to be working with the brilliant @flatiron_books editors @cableeke and @blkgrlreading and am grateful for the early advocacy from the amazing @nadxinieto. Huge thanks, as always, to my wonderful agent @margaretesb, @folioliterary on our fourth book together! And I’m indebted to the astute critique partners who advised and guided me along the way. One week, three projects….

Over the weekend, I had an amazing time discussing COYOTELAND @bookmarksnc 📚 A wonderful festival—so many avid readers and thoughtful touches, including original art commissioned for each author! 🐺 (📸 @nadiahashimibooks book graphic)

I gave an introductory artists talk at @anngettyinstitute_usfca @usfmfa.writing @usfca, presenting research and reading from my novel-in-progress for the very first time! 🎨🖌️

Now proofreading UPROOTED @tin_house @zandoprojects -- one step closer to publication in April 2027 🌿

And the week's not over! This Friday, I’m excited to chat with Alysia Li Ying Sawchyn @oh_well_peanutbutter about her lovely essay collection I HAVE THIS THING FOR FLOWERS @flatiron_books @onwaverly 🌷🌼🌺🌹

Grateful to do events for COYOTELAND while preparing for the launch of UPROOTED in April, even though it can feel a bit like having Irish twins 👶🏻👶🏻

I’m very excited to start the next-next thing. This fall, I’m an Ann Getty Endowed Visiting-Artist Scholar @anngettyinstitute_usfca working on a novel inspired by the painter Bernice Bing. Born in Chinatown, queer and orphaned, she came of age at the heart of the Beat movement.

This generous fellowship has enabled me to take oil painting classes and covered research expenses and supplies as I retrace her steps and dig into archives, as well as connected me to university experts to deepen my understanding of that era.

On Tuesday, September 29 at 5:30 pm, I’ll be giving an introductory talk to discuss my writing practice and my novel-in-progress at @usfca McLaren Complex 250. taken in University of San Francisco by @mononoke97

We flipped on Satan’s Cesspool, a class 3+ rapid on the south fork of the American River. It happened so fast—it was disorienting and terrifying, the water freezing. Even though we had helmets and life-vests, I worried we could drown. Meanwhile, a commercial photographer was clicking away, all in a day’s work.

We asked the boys if they would go rafting again and they said maybe…but not for a while. by @mononoke97

Next Tuesday 8/18 at @yourlocaleconomy I’ll be in conversation with Vanessa Hua @mononoke97 about her lively new novel Coyoteland. It’s such a fun book, narrated by various characters of different backgrounds and ages in the fictional East Bay town of El Nido—read and guess which real town served as inspiration!

We tend to talk about caregiving and community in this series, and Coyoteland definitely delves into those themes, with some electrifying side trips into foraging, the pandemic, real estate development, white privilege, and the shenanigans of one rogue coyote. I had the delight of studying with Vanessa at Storyboard at @smcmfa this summer and she’s a wellspring of wisdom and generosity. I can’t wait for this conversation!
