Press Release – In-Custody Death at Mono County JailOn Friday, July 10, 2026, at 3:10 am, Correctional Deputies found a male incarcerated person, John DeMotto, age 49, unresponsive alone in his assigned cell. They immediately requested medical assistance and began life-saving measures. Mono County Emergency Medical Services and Bridgeport Fire personnel responded and continued resuscitation efforts. Despite these efforts, Mr. DeMotto was pronounced deceased at 3:52 am.Investigators from the Mono County District Attorney and Mono County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and are conducting the In-Custody Death investigation. The autopsy will be conducted by Washoe County, which has been contracted by the Mono County Sheriff’s Office for pathology services.Mr. DeMotto had been in custody since June 9, 2026, on charges of driving under the influence of narcotics and possession of narcotics.Sheriff Ingrid BraunJuly 10, 2026 by @monosheriff

Beginning the first week of July 2026, Mono County Sheriff's Office uniformed personnel will proudly wear our **250th Anniversary Commemorative Patch** in honor of America's 250th birthday.This special patch will be worn from **July 4, 2026, through the end of the year**, recognizing 250 years of our nation's history and the enduring spirit of those who have served it.The commemorative patch was designed by one of our sheriff's deputies. Of course, no celebration would be complete without K-9 Gunni joining in the festivities. Gunni will proudly sport the commemorative patch on his vest as well—because everyone knows the K-9 unit never wants to be left out! The photo was captured by his handler, **Deputy Pelichowski**, who managed to get Gunni to hold still long enough for the perfect patriotic pose.As we commemorate America's 250th birthday, we join communities across the nation in honoring the generations who came before us, celebrating those who serve today, and inspiring those who will serve tomorrow.Since we missed posting this on the 4th, Happy 250th Birthday, America!🇺🇸 by @monosheriff

In observance of July 4th, the Mono County Sheriff's Administrative Office will be closed Friday, July 3rd, 2026.Even though our offices will be closed, our committed team of Dispatchers and Deputies will still be here to serve our community. The Inyo National Forest, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, and the Bureau of Land Management entered into and implemented Fire Restrictions on June 22, 2026.
