I am running for College Board!

I am first, foremost, and forever a teacher. I am a community college and trade school graduate, and today I teach in San Francisco’s public schools.

I understand what students need to succeed. I work directly with the students City College serves and the programs City College provides. I have seen firsthand how a strong partnership between City College and K–12 schools can change a student’s life.

City College faces serious financial, enrollment, and governance challenges. Addressing these challenges will require a practical plan. We must return to the basics: balance the budget, increase enrollment, and put student success first.

Every decision I make will begin with one question: What best serves students? I want my students to know that when they are ready to take their next step, whether toward a degree, a trade, or simply a love for learning, City College will be stable and able to serve them.

I’m a teacher. I stepped into a classroom that hasn’t had an educator all year. Amid a teacher shortage and a budget crisis, students are failing to meet grade-level standards in public schools like mine across the country.

Long nights were spent making lesson plans from scratch using any bootleg materials I could find. With the support of educators and administrators at Marina Middle School, it was all worth it.

My students reading this would probably describe me as tough, but it’s a tough love. On the first day, I said my only ask is that you try your best. And although I can’t protect you from the difficulties outside the classroom, I can try my best, one lesson at a time. 🍎

I will be a fiscal watchdog. Every dollar will support student success and meet students’ needs. This is my pledge to you.

I want every student to have every door of opportunity: career technical education, dual enrollment, and a timely path to a degree.

As a teacher at a Title I school, I know what it means to sacrifice my own salary to give my students every opportunity they deserve: a class set of textbooks, pencils, even a soccer ball.

As a City Commissioner, I was appointed to a department that was facing serious allegations of corruption. This Executive Director allegedly misused $4.6 million in public funds. This money should have gone toward services that met the needs of our City. On my first day, I recommended the nomination of a permanent Executive Director.

This is the discipline I will bring to City College. by @monroelace

Today is the deadline to run for office.

After teaching summer school for students in need of academic remediation, it became undeniable to me that Bridge to Success, dual enrollment, and career technical education changed the course of my students’ lives. Along the way, it dawned on me: I have to run.

I’ve never felt more certain about a decision, or more hopeful about what’s possible. taken in San Francisco Department of Elections by @monroelace

This school year was full of firsts. I brought parent voice to my school by starting a Parent Teacher Association, led our local spelling bee, and spent every single day bringing rigorous instruction for my students.

The best part is working with the kind and hardworking teachers at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School.

Next school year, I am proud to announce that I will begin my EdD in Educational Leadership at San Francisco State University. by @monroelace

I, like so many young trans girls, came to this city looking for a place to call home. San Francisco gave me a home when I had no home.

My hope is that I’ve been able to give back to the city that’s given so much to me. My hope is that I’ve been able to play a small part in touching the lives of every man, woman, and child I meet.

I will forever be proud to wear San Francisco across my heart. My sincere thank you to Supervisor Mandelman and San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors for this honor. taken in San Francisco City Hall by @monroelace

@elizabethkpix shared my story, my public service, and my home.

"Four years ago, I ran away from home. In the middle of the night, I packed everything in a single suitcase. Because I'd rather be loved and homeless than in a home that didn't love me," she said.

Monroe has lived in a single-room-occupancy hotel or SRO for the past four years. That's the longest of any tenant currently in the building." taken in San Francisco, California by @monroelace
