“VELVET RAGE” Poem

-

“It took many years of vomiting up all the filth I’d been taught about myself, and half-believed, before I was able to walk on the earth as though I had a right to be here.” - James Baldwin by @monstrame

“San Francisco”
Acrylic on Canvas
8 x 10

Back during World War 2, San Francisco was a major Navy port. “Blue discharges” or “Blue tickets” were given to sailors and other military personnel who were found out to be homosexual, and these men were brought back to the mainland, and many processed through the port at San Francisco if they were serving in the Pacific theatre. Instead of returning home where they would be socially outcast, many chose to stay in San Francisco. This history helped cement queer culture and identity in the area, especially the Castro District, one of the first gay neighborhoods in the United States.

I was really inspired by the aesthetic of a Navy sailor with an anchor tattoo, and I’m very proud to see improvement of my shading/shadow techniques in this piece, and thought it was a neat little way to mix Pride month history with summertime fun ☀️⚓️🏳️‍🌈 by @monstrame
