Building a character, finding one's own or another self often means being exposed to a confrontation that leads to reflection. Excessive demands as a means of overcoming inner limits.

Selma Lagerlöf's Nils Holgersson involuntarily embarks on a journey into a transfigured dimension. Shrunken and torn out of his familiar, he begins to see, not only differently, but at all.
It is a departure into an uncertain future, a moment of maturing and understanding. Through the radical change of perspective and the loss of control, he suddenly becomes aware of his own actions.

Ishmael from Herman Melville's Moby Dick also faces a departure, voluntarily and yet inwardly forced. Driven by melancholy and a feeling of existential confinement, he breaks away from all previous ties and duties. Like Nils, he becomes an observer in a world that reaches beyond him.

Both characters embark on a journey that not only means external movement, but also profound inner change. They are seekers, not classic heroes. They stand on the edge of the action: Nils between animal and human, Ishmael between human and mystery. In their encounter with overwhelming nature, they both recognise their own smallness and at the same time the ability of humans to gain understanding. A new form of belonging gradually grows out of the unfamiliarity in which they find themselves. by @montecroma
