What happens when we stop consuming and start creating?

Month of Modern is proud to co-sponsor Creators, Not Consumers, part of The Human Advantage Summit.

In a world of endless content, constant input, and algorithms competing for our attention, this conversation asks us to consider what we do with all that inspiration. How do we move from passive consumption to active contribution? How do we cultivate the curiosity, confidence, and creativity to make something meaningful?

Join Creative Health Scientist Katina Bajaj, artist and sculptor Patrick Marold, and filmmaker Jeffrey Palmer for a conversation about creativity as something we practice—not simply something we consume.

Wednesday, October 7 | 7 PM
Doors at 6 PM

A fitting continuation of the conversations we’ve been having all month about curiosity, creativity, and the very human act of making.

The experience of a space is shaped at every scale.

From the architecture of a room to the furniture within it, Tumu Studio considers how each element contributes to the whole. Their multidisciplinary practice moves between architecture, interiors, custom furniture, millwork, and art—creating spaces that feel cohesive, thoughtful, and deeply personal.

Founded by Huili Feng and Ross Barney, Tumu takes its name from the Chinese words tu—earth—and mu—wood. Together, they translate simply to build, reflecting a philosophy grounded in authenticity, simplicity, and a respect for the materials that shape our surroundings.

Because sometimes the smallest details are what make a space feel complete.

Modern doesn’t have to mean anonymous.

FLOWER Architecture approaches each home as an opportunity to create something with its own identity—shaped by context, proportion, texture, and the particular lives unfolding within it.

There’s room for restraint, but also warmth. Clean lines alongside tactile materials. Familiar forms interpreted in unexpected ways. Details that bring rhythm, depth, and just enough personality to make a place memorable.

The result is architecture that feels distinctly modern without losing its sense of welcome.

Because a home can be beautifully composed and still have something to say.

Simplicity takes work.

In modern architecture, there’s nowhere for the details to hide.

cgmodern approaches clean lines and simple forms with an exacting eye—considering how materials meet, how patterns align, and how every connection contributes to the larger composition. What appears effortless is often the result of careful planning, collaboration, and precision.

It’s a kind of craftsmanship that doesn’t ask for attention. Instead, it creates space for texture, shadow, and the natural character of the materials themselves.

Because simple doesn’t mean easy. It means considered.

Sometimes design begins with what’s already there.

A boulder. A slope. The texture of stone. The way water moves across the land.

For more than 50 years, Boulder-based MARPA has approached landscape architecture as an opportunity to work with the natural world rather than simply shape it. Their contemplative approach brings together landscape, architecture, ecology, and craft to create gardens that feel deeply connected to their surroundings.

The result is work that celebrates both the rawness of the earth and the precision of thoughtful design—creating places that invite us to slow down, notice, and connect.

Because sometimes the most meaningful intervention is knowing what to leave untouched.

Every building begins with the ground beneath it.

Long before the walls go up, there are questions to solve: how a project meets the land, how water moves across a site, how people arrive, how infrastructure connects, and how an idea makes its way through a complex approval process.

SiteWorks brings planning, civil engineering, and design thinking together to solve those less-visible challenges. With decades of local experience, their team works alongside architects, developers, municipalities, and communities to help turn ambitious ideas into places that can actually be built.

Because some of the most important design decisions happen before you ever see the building.

Great design comes to life through craftsmanship.

Cottonwood Custom Builders believes that exceptional homes are created through collaboration, craftsmanship, and a shared commitment to quality. By working closely with clients, architects, and designers, they help shape environments that feel personal, enduring, and deeply connected to the people who call them home.

Their work is a reminder that behind every thoughtfully designed space is a team dedicated to bringing it to life.

A great space doesn’t call attention to every decision.

It lets you notice the view.
The texture.
The proportions.
The way the day changes a room.

Studio B approaches architecture as a process of refinement—considering every element in relation to the whole, from the landscape outside to the details within.

The result is architecture that feels effortless, even when nothing about the process was.

Thoughtful. Restrained. Made for living.

What if a home could feel connected to both the city and the landscape?

Tumu’s Sunset Residence sits just blocks from downtown Boulder, yet its design creates a strong relationship with the outdoors. Expansive openings frame views of the Flatirons, while the backyard becomes an extension of daily life—a place to swim, gather, garden, and simply be outside.

Behind that sense of ease is a thoughtful approach to performance. Solar shading, a high-efficiency heat pump, rooftop solar, and a robust building envelope work together toward the home’s goal of Net Zero Energy.

A home designed not just around where you live, but how you want to live.

The details tell you how something was built.

A handrail you touch every day. A connection between wood and steel. The alignment of one element with the next.

At Bauen Build, that level of care extends from the details you can see to the ones hidden behind the walls. Their team pairs meticulous craftsmanship with technical precision, approaching each home as a collection of decisions that need to work beautifully together.

Because building well isn’t about one big gesture. It’s about getting the little things right, again and again.
