It is SO special to share collecting journeys… and I’m beyond grateful that my mission to photograph the most interesting watches in the world has brought me to this.

A friend recently took delivery of this Patek Philippe Ref. 5086R from the 2025 Rare Handcrafts Collection. It’s inspired by Jules Verne’s Five Weeks in a Balloon. He’s one of the first people I met when I started attending Journe events, and he’s well aware of my obsession with cloisonné enamel dials, so being able to spend time with this and capture this special moment in his journey was extra meaningful.

I often tell people that collecting isn’t only the act of acquiring pieces, it’s also the sharing of moments. Very grateful to photograph this!

Continuing to recap WatchTime…

After drooling over the Balancier Contemporain, which I now jokingly call “my Greubel”, I told the brand’s CEO Michel Nydegger that my moment with these watches at age 42 reminded me of the old Porsche commercial, where a kid daydreams in class all day, rides his bike to a Porsche dealership, and is allowed to sit in a 911. It’s the moment when a dream becomes a goal. The moment that makes him ask for the representative’s business card and say, “I’ll see you in about twenty years.”

That’s me, looking at the Balancier Contemporain and realizing how good it felt on my wrist.

I catch myself being delusionally optimistic all the time, but I’m serious when I say Greubel Forsey had that effect on me. And the feeling alone, of wanting to own or get closer to something I’m simply happy to see existing, is powerful as hell.

That’s what pushing the extreme looks and feels like. Thank you for your time, @michelknydegger and @deezbrown122 . I saw you both entertaining questions from collectors of all experience levels, and I think, much like the gentleman in the Porsche ad who treats the young child enthusiast with respect, the openness of a brand allows people to dream. I’ll keep working hard so that maybe one day I can make that call, hopefully sooner than twenty years 😉

GWD Part 9. The MB&F BBQ, and enough independent watchmaking for a whole show.

It’s quite obvious I’m a fan of @mbandf . At events like this, where you feel the passion for everything independent among collectors of all backgrounds, the admiration only grows. Swipe for the wide range of indies ❤️

Two frames go to the AG, because the tiniest shift in angle paints a totally different dial. It’s @nycwatchguy’s creation with the brand, and it’s nominated at this year’s GPHG. I was there when he received the piece and know just how much it matters to him. Good luck on November 7!

GWD Part 8. On launch day for the M.A.D.3, even F.P. Journe stopped by.

My friend KBM and I had the chance to visit the MB&F M.A.D.Gallery that day. Collectors of all backgrounds kept streaming in, and one of the team told us we had missed FP by minutes. It was my first Geneva trip and I love this about the city already. You see or hear about your horological heroes all the time.

I also loved how the watches were presented, surrounded by Vincent Calabrese’s own pieces. Ten of them flash by on slide 2. Look for the ones where the hour travels in a little window: that is his Baladin, the 1989 idea behind the M.A.D.3.

@maxbusser is a hero to many of us, and one of his greatest qualities is that he doesn’t just surround himself with great talent. He puts the spotlight on the people we should all know. Vincent did the same for his peers: in 1985 he and Svend Andersen founded the AHCI, an academy that gave independent watchmakers a stage of their own.

In that spirit, credit to @relogiosmecanicos , the Portuguese-language forum where I read about it, among a wealth of texts on all things horology.

@calabrese.vincent just wrote that the journey continues. Congratulations, maestro, and to everyone at @m.a.d.editions taken in MB&F M.A.D.Gallery by @montresetal

GWD Part 7. It’s FRIDAY. Today I raise a glass to Franc Vila.

I’ve mentioned luck in my journey many times and this is no exception. I met Franc and his son the night before this visit, which was not a formal shoot by any means. It was yet another hangout, and I see a pattern that maybe explains my own craziness. I want my photos to carry a bit of the real-life feeling of encountering dreamy pieces.

When I glue my eye to the viewfinder, I often block out sound. It’s a feeling I hope to write or make a video about one day. I go full tunnel vision when I see certain dials.

The Tahitian black mother-of-pearl dial shut me up. It comes from Les Cadraniers de Genève. If you’re a Journe fan, you’ve heard of them... As someone who dreamed for years of a Journe Nacre Boutique edition before they were discontinued 😭 you can very quickly guess which piece here is my favorite.

GWD Part 6. Konstantin Chaykin. Watches that are going to space right now, and the paintings behind them.

I’d wanted to see a Chaykin in person since I first read about him during the pandemic, so when @oseregin invited me to visit during GWD, I was quite excited to go.

SPACE! These watches on the velcro straps... yes, they went outside the International Space Station, on four spacewalks so far, the latest in May this year, on the wrists of working cosmonauts. Not a heritage story, or marketing... an active program. One more for the long list of reasons collectors who haven’t looked at independents yet really should. This is where creativity, audacity and... GOOD craziness happen.

The two behind the glass are the ones that flew. The black one on the catalogue is the civilian version, 28 pieces.

In hand, the new Wolf. Eyes tell the time, and the red tongue comes out in the days around a full moon.

Then a tour of Konstantin’s paintings. I selected some. Watch parts become characters: a watchmaker at his bench under a sky of gears, a time eater, an eternal wanderer. My favorite was the Dormouse from Alice in Wonderland, painted as a waving lucky cat. And if you’ve seen the Venus he made with Jacopo at @gmt_italy, you’ll recognize the painting. Side note: I finally met @jacopo_corvo on this trip, but before this visit. Would have loved to have that conversation with the painting fresh in my head. Next time, Jacopo!

Thank you, Olga, the team, and the colleague who walked me through the paintings 🙏🏽 taken in Geneva Switzerland by @montresetal

GWD Part 5. Simon Brette, two years after the post that started it.

Two years and 24 days ago, I wrote one of my favorite posts on this account. Thanks to @nycwatchguy, I had just seen @simon_brette_watches ’s Chronomètre Artisans in person for the first time, a watch I’d wanted to see ever since reading @markkauzlarich’s “One to Watch” feature on Simon for @hodinkee in 2023. In my post, I compared it to seeing a Ferrari Modena 360 for the first time as a teenager in Brazil, a feeling I still point to.

Meeting Simon and the team behind the watches has been on my list ever since. This visit was one of the most special moments of my journey. The watches communicate an obsession with detail, but seeing that obsession lived out in person is truly priceless. Beyond the art and the craft, there’s a deep appreciation for people that you feel in every interaction at the atelier. It’s there before you even step in: right at the entrance, on a shelf, sits a photo of @onlybuyingtime , who was there before the first watch existed. The night before, he was Simon’s dinner companion at the table next to ours, and that’s how this visit came to be. A long-awaited goal, finally met.

Thank you, Simon, and the whole team, for opening the doors 🙏🏽 taken in Geneva Switzerland by @montresetal

GWD Part 4. Laurent Ferrier. The dinner I didn’t photograph, and the morning after.

The night before this, my friend KBM and I had dinner with collectors of the brand, its team, and Laurent Ferrier himself. Like most people who take horology seriously, we are big fans of the man. Every person at that table spoke with passion. I had my camera with me and made a conscious decision not to shoot. It was too good a moment to step out of: people who love the brand, wearing their pieces with pride, each describing in their own words what seems to unite its admirers. Laurent Ferrier tends to be the choice of people who truly know watches and choose them for themselves, not for anyone else.

Early in my journey into independents, I owned one, and being around so many again reminded me how much I admire the brand. The next morning, we had the first appointment of the day and the best light of the trip. These were all shot at the Hôtel d’Angleterre, and you’ll see the same pieces indoors and out on the balcony. That’s a photographer’s dream, since brand imagery usually commits to one angle and one light, and seeing a watch across the whole range is how I understand it in full, behind the camera and as a collector who plans roadmaps slowly.

I can’t pick a single favorite, so here are two: the Classic Traveller Globe Night Blue and the Classic Moon Dusk. We could spend all day on technical perfection, and there is plenty of it here, but the pieces that stay with me tend to be the ones that steal my breath, my focus, my words.

KBM fell hard for the new Classic Origin Beige and described the joy of handling it like kid on Christmas Day. The last frame is that moment.

On the table and the balcony:
✦ Classic Traveller Globe Night Blue
✦ Classic Origin Blue, Beige, White
✦ Classic Auto Horizon
✦ Grand Sport Tourbillon
✦ Classic Moon Dusk

GWD Part 3. As a newbie, I did an inefficient amount of walking between venues.

And loved it.

Saw a Ferrari Purosangue for the first time (controversial, I know, but not gonna lie, I dig it), caught a lovely human/dog team nap, soaked up some views, and ran into people I didn’t think I would.

One of them was @bernardo.entusiasta . If you can’t tell, I hang out with the nerdiest of the nerdiest, and Bernardo’s role is a different one, and a huge one: he has opened the door for a whole wave of people to learn more about this world, and that is something I will always support. Given the choice, my vote is for more bridges, always. He’s also a great photographer. (The OP frame here is his work, shot with my Q3 43.) We had a quick chat about his Leica Q2 Ghost by Hodinkee, the one @benclymer himself spotted at W&W a couple of years ago, if I remember his post right. With him were @macmasi , wearing this insane Rolex Tiger Iron GMT, and a friend rocking an Urwerk UR-210, Clou de Paris no less.

GWD Part 2. The dinner KBM and I promised each other while he was still waiting for his first Journe.

My friend and I live 5,000 miles apart. Since we met, a tradition has slowly taken shape: at least one hangout a year, always involving food. Something fine dining, something simple, and conversations that outlast the meals.

This one was special. Back when he had just started the wait for his first F.P. Journe, we said that one day we’d sit down at F.P.Journe Le Restaurant with the pieces we dreamed of on our wrists. His Lune, my Havana. We finally did, and we could not be more grateful.

A quiet Monday. Table neighbors who ended up shaping the next day. Plenty of time with the very friendly restaurant team, including the impressive and knowledgeable sommelier Bogdan Tand (wearing the famous red élégante in our joint wrist shot). Also great to see Chef Dominique Gauthier making time for every single guest.

Dessert came out set to ten to two, so yes, I reset my watch to match it 🤦🏽‍♂️

Cheers to journeys with friends. To patiently waiting. taken in F.P Journe Le Restaurant by @montresetal

GWD Part 1, finally. Cliché, but true: for me, this was all about people.

Just hours after landing in Geneva, my friend KBM and I ran into other Brazilians we know, a couple of them people I’d been speaking with for years and was finally meeting in person. That’s mostly what this first recap is about: an epic hangout at @bucherer (thank you @gregduboc and @lorenzo.f.rr ) with a generous dose of serious horology.

Congrats to Greg, who took delivery of his Armin Strom Gravity Equal Force Ultimate Sapphire Purple that same day, and to @horologynomad , who picked up his MB&F LM101. Anyone who follows this feed knows the LM101 is one of the most photographed watches here. I’m obsessed. Maybe one day 😎

Most of the wrist shots are me (15.9cm). Everything else that came across the table:

✦ De Bethune DB25Vxs Silver Moon
✦ Moser Streamliner Tourbillon Bucherer BLUE
✦ Bulgari Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater
✦ Laurent Ferrier Square Micro-Rotor
✦ Chopard L.U.C Flying T Twin Perpetual
✦ Tudor Black Bay 54 Blue
✦ Ulysse Nardin Freak X Blue
