Aberdeen Artist Series #2 🎸 🥁 🎵

The second instalment of this wee project is now finally over the line and features a guy that I’m personally very grateful to.

@frasermonza from the brilliant @monza.express 🙌

Years ago, Fraser and the bands then lead guitarist Shaun asked me to come along and photograph one of their gigs. Little did I know at the time that it would spark a love for music photography that I hadn’t quite realised I had. Fast forward a good few years and I’ve loved listening to them and shooting them at least 5 million times.

“Indie Pop ‘n’ Roll” best describes what the lads create, and what has become loved all over the North East of Scotland and certainly further afield!

Heavily inspired by The Beatles, Oasis, The Who, Bowie and The Foo Fighters… which is all very apparent when you see and hear them play. Fraser’s love for good music is infectious, I very quickly realised how important music was to Fraser when I first met him all those years ago; he has taste of the highest standard and I love seeing his influences shine when they perform live.

Monza have been prominent for years, playing all of our venues around the city, and always pulling a crowd to whatever they do. Their association with The Beatles has somewhat serendipitously seen them play @cavernliverpool multiple times… we all know what that place is so famous for and I can only imagine how that felt for Fraser and the lads.

I think Monza Express is another amazing example of the thriving music scene and talent we have here in Aberdeen. I can’t thank Fraser enough… both for his time and effort with this as well as him opening a door for me so long ago that I didn’t realise needed opened! Absolute legend 🤝

Final member of the band in our series of Meet the Band is our adorable lead singer Fraser

1. Who is your favorite band or artist to listen to?

The Beatles – you probably knew that already folks.

2. What TV series are you binge watching or what book are you reading?

I was rewatching Gotham but the world cup and series 3 of House of the Dragon distracted me a bit…

3. Favorite gig you've ever attended and why?

Oasis Live 25 is probably taking that one just over Paul McCartney. Oasis was just amazing and taking my (then 13 year old) son with me made it extra special. It just had that extra feeling to it because I’d written it off ever happening again. Genuinely believe Murrayfield for those few hours was the happiest place on earth.

4. Favourite thing about being in a band?

Gives me an excuse occasionally to get to play Beatles tunes with a full band as opposed to just at home!

5. What would you like to achieve with the band?

Keeping things realistic I’d love to be able to put out an album on vinyl. And play King Tuts. Once one of them’s done, ask me again.

Next in our series of Meet the Band is the young handsome one (and yes it's Manager Maria writing this 😜)

Here's our newest member of the band Euan and his answers to my incredibly intellectual questions...

1. Who is your favorite band or artist to listen to?

Of all time changes all the time but Oasis are a constant, more currently been listening to The Highs album and lots of jangle guitar 🎸

2. What TV series are you binge watching or what book are you reading?

⁠Been watching The Thick of It religiously for the last while, they don’t make em like they used to 😅

3. Favorite gig you've ever attended and why?

⁠ooooff could pick so many for different reasons… Teenage Fabclub at the Barras playing Grand Prix and Songs for Northern Britain back to back was just mega!

4. Favorite thing about being in a band?

⁠I think meeting other bands and people at gigs has been great, sharing the love for music!

5. What would you like to achieve with the band?

Getting the chance to record songs and release music with my guitar parts on.

Next up in our series of Meet The Band we have Greg, our utterly essential bass player.

1. Who is your favorite band or artist to listen to?

Changes all the time. Longstanding bands in my rotation are the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Biffy Clyro and Rage Against the Machine. Currently loving Fontaines DC, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and Sofia Isella.

2. What TV series are you binge watching or what book are you reading?

Not so much binging, but catching up when I can with Daredevil: Born Again

3. Favorite gig you've ever attended and why?

It was probably my first proper gig, which was Oasis at Murrayfield in 2000. We were absolutely buzzing, the atmosphere was electric and the band was incredible.

4. Favorite thing about being in a band?

It's the best excuse to go hang out with your mates and escape from life for a bit.

5. What would you like to achieve with the band?

Just to keep enjoying it.

As we rehearse in the lead up to our headline gig with @kaleidoscope_est2024 and @sister.october in September we thought it was a good time to introduce the band members. First up is the guy who hides at the back, usually with a big grin...ladies and gentlemen let me introduce our drummer ...

DECO!!

1. Who is your favorite band or artist to listen to?

Oasis, The Coral, or The Beatles. Changes hourly

2. What TV series are you binge watching or what book are you reading?

I'm always bingeing It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia in some form it feels like. Currenty reading Being John Lennon by Ray Connelly

3. Favorite gig you've ever attended and why?

Top ones that come to mind first are Tom Petty at the Albert Hall, Noel Gallagher at Koko (Campden), Paul McCartney in Glasgow..my first ever gig was Status Quo at the old AECC and it changed my life. The Coral at TITP 2002 was a special moment...but Oasis 2025 was probably the greatest tour and setlist of all time, euphoric! Have never experienced anything quite like it, it was perfect

4. Favorite thing about being in a band?

Visiting new places and venues, recording new songs, meeting new people and hearing new bands. I am really lucky to get to do these things and with my mates, playing music we've made together and seeing people enjoying it and singing along with our songs...nothing beats it

5. What would you like to achieve with the band?

Support The Coral just once, world domination, to destroy the Tory Party, not too much to ask I don't think! But ultimately just to keep having fun
