why was beyoncé’s “in da club” (aka “sexy lil thug”) never officially released?

in 2003, beyoncé recorded her own version of 50 cent’s “in da club”. it received radio play but was never officially released as a single. the most widely reported explanation is sample clearance and licensing issues, since it reused the original instrumental and melody. another rumour suggests 50 cent’s label didn’t want it competing with the original, though this has never been confirmed. her father and manager, mathew knowles, reportedly described it as a promotional “buzz cut” rather than a track intended for dangerously in love.

the peace patrol at woodstock ’99

the peace patrol was a group of around 500 volunteers and staff at woodstock ’99 who wore bright yellow t-shirts and helped with security inside the festival.

they received only two to three days of training and were supposed to assist private security and new york state police.

part of their job was guarding the festival’s 12-foot “peace wall”, a plywood and steel barrier surrounding the site.

by the final day, extreme heat, huge crowds and the chaos around the festival overwhelmed them. as fires and riots broke out, some peace patrol members reportedly abandoned their posts or took off their shirts and left the area.

the yellow peace patrol t-shirt became one of the most recognisable pieces of woodstock ’99 memorabilia.

#wcw (part 2): norma-jean wofford aka “the duchess”

norma-jean wofford, better known as “the duchess,” was a guitarist from pittsburgh who played with bo diddley from 1962 to 1966.

bo had known her family since the late 1950s and taught norma-jean how to play guitar, eventually teaching her his own style of electric rhythm guitar.

when peggy “lady bo” jones left the band, he brought in norma-jean, named her “the duchess” and told people they were brother and sister. they weren’t related. he said the story helped him protect her while they were touring.

she toured england with bo in 1963 and appeared on the covers of several of his albums, including bo diddley & company. she also appeared in the big t.n.t. show, filmed in 1965, playing guitar, singing and dancing.

in 1964, she played second guitar on three tracks of two great guitars, the album bo diddley made with chuck berry. the tracks were “when the saints go marching in,” “fireball” and “stay sharp.”

she was also apparently bo’s “bank” on the road. according to a remembrance published after her death, he trusted her to look after his money while they were touring. and in 1965, she was even mentioned by name in the animals’ song “the story of bo diddley.”

she left the band in 1966 after getting married and moved to florida to raise a family. she died in 2005.

#wcw ep.1 — michèle mouton

michèle mouton is a french rally driver who became the first woman to win a round of the world rally championship, and the only woman to have ever finished second in the championship.

she actually never planned on becoming a rally driver. her father was the one who encouraged her to drive, and she started competing in 1973 (she first raced as a co-driver before moving into the driver’s seat)

in 1975, she raced at the 24 hours of le mans and won her class in a two-litre prototype. three years later, she won the tour de france automobile, competing against both men and women.

in 1981, she joined the audi team and started driving the quattro. that same year, she won the rallye sanremo, becoming the first woman to win a world championship rally.

she went on to win three more wrc rallies in 1982, in portugal, greece and brazil, and finished the season as vice world champion, just behind walter röhrl.

in 1985, she went to colorado to compete at pikes peak. she won the hill climb and set a new course record, becoming the first woman to win the event.

she won the german rally championship the following year, then retired from full-time rallying.

after retiring, she co-founded the race of champions, an event where world champions from different forms of motorsport race against each other in identical cars, and later became president of the fia women & motor sport commission.
