My solo exhibit 𝘼𝙡𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙎𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙨á𝙮 (𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮) @flux_factory curated by Meghana Karnik @storefrontpsychic is currently on view through November 2 with ✨EXTENDED✨ gallery hours for the entire month—

Alagaan ang Salaysáy honors Filipino nurses in Queens, Brooklyn, and New York City. Drawing on the migration story sparked by the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act and the 1970s nurse recruitment drives, Catbagan gathers oral histories from a community whose work has sustained the city’s healthcare system for decades. The words tita (aunt), ate (sister), and kuya (brother) recur—titles of care and respect that transcend bloodlines.

Visitors are invited to listen and read these stories vocally, transforming each into what Catbagan calls “a living monument of care.” In doing so, the exhibition turns listening into an act of devotion, infusing nurses’ labor into cultural memory.

Special thanks to @nyscouncilonthearts fellowship and the nurses who were generous with their stories.

🎨 May Open Studios at the @residencyunlimited on @governorsisland
📍 RU House, Colonels Row, Building #404B
📅 Sunday May 31, 2025 | 12 - 5 PM

During my residency, I worked in conversation with Governors Island’s architecture, treating walls, surfaces, and unobserved details as collaborators rather than backdrops. Through rubbings, I approached the built environment as an archive, using touch and transfer to excavate traces of time embedded in the island’s structures.

I became especially drawn to cracks in walls. What first appeared as signs of wear gradually became something else: abstract entry points, portals, openings into imagined histories and alternative narratives. These fissures offered a way of thinking about architecture as porous and alive, shaped by cycles of occupation, weathering, repair, and transformation.

The works that emerged move between documentation and abstraction, collecting impressions of surfaces while remaining open to speculation. They are records of contact between body and site, past and present, material and memory.

Honored to present @everywomanbiennial @penandbrushnyc three manang (Tagalog for “sister”) time capsules bearing the names of Filipina women who stood at the frontlines of the Delano Grape Strike of 1965: Maria Rifo, Guadalupe Pena, and Esperanza Pulmano.

They fought for dignity, better working conditions, a living wage, and a retirement home for their older, single, unhoused brothers.

Mexican and Filipino women were the unsung heroes behind the United Farm Workers movement, less visible than their union brothers, yet essential as the backbone of collective organizing, care, and survival.

Each capsule holds goods from Little Manila, Woodside. Offerings that layer time itself: a gesture from the present to honor past elders, and seed future acts of remembrance.
