Into the Scrub: After Jamal Ara is an exhibition by artist Moomal, created as part of her project under IFA’s Archives and Museums programme.

Borrowing its title from one of Jamal Ara’s notes, the exhibition brings together observational drawings, field recordings, letters and lab notes to explore the practices of observing, organising and making sense of biological worlds.

Moving between macroscopic and microscopic scales, Moomal’s work reflects on conditions of forgetfulness and discovery, and the ways in which life is labelled, measured, named and organised, while always slipping beyond these forms of containment.

The exhibition space is located within the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) campus. Visitors are advised to carry a digital copy of their Aadhaar for the visitor pass.

When weaving on a backstrap loom, the body becomes an anchor, keeping the warp taut. The back holds the tension in the threads, every irregular bend, stagger, and hunch reflects as an irregular weave. The floor loom sets this up differently, marking an interval between the body and the object/machine. Following this interruption, the body allows itself to walk away without punctuating the weave.
Discontinuity of the weaver is more often not a discontinuity of the weave. For the floor loom encloses tension in steady selvedges that owe themselves to no unique bodies.
