✨Introducing… Me!✨

Hi! I’m Marissa. What better way to introduce myself than to share some of my favorite things 🥰 do we have any in common?

Here are some more fun facts about me:
- I have two cats, Freya and Grayson. They aren’t featured in this post, but they probably should have been
- I am a vegetarian and have been since my junior year of college.
- I am the biggest mood reader. I cannot stick to a set TBR to save my life.
- I love almost all genre of books, but non-fiction and historical fiction are the hardest for me (if you have any good recs for those genres, drop them in the comments!)
- I have two bachelors degrees. They are for psychology and neuroscience.

Scorpion Deep by C.G. Drew’s

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A lonely boy who accidentally awakens an obsessive eldritch sea god.

I am obsessed with this book. I want to peel its skin off and crawl into it kind of obsessed.

We follow Jonathan, a boy suffering abuse at home and feeling abandoned by his friends, after he completes an ancient ritual to summon a sea god, Scorpion Deep. Also, Scorpion deep just so happens to be a beautiful boy. If that doesn’t intrigue you I truthfully don’t know what will.

The audiobook narration is fantastic. Mark Sanderlin really captures the essence of Jonathan perfectly, the story felt so real and vivid when I was listening. I absolutely recommend listening to this one (or doing an immersive read) if you have the chance,

This book is dripping in longing and desperation, the way that CG Drews expressed these emotions is visceral. I found myself crying at multiple points because I could feel Jonathan’s feeling so intensely. The writing is steeped in despair and frantic need. I blew through this book in two days because I physically could not stop reading it. I feel so deeply for both Jonathan and Scorpion Deep, they are both so dear to me.

The book is set on an isolated island with a small population. It lends a claustrophobic air to the whole story which I think works very well to up the horror. Every single character that we meet feels so frustratingly real and true to the story. I truly adored it all.

CG Drews does not shy away from the gore in this book. It is explicit and visceral and to be honest, gross. There were points I was alternating between crying and gagging which I can confidently say no book has made me do to date.

I would recommend that everyone pick up this book, whether you’re a horror reader or not (I certainly am not typically a horror reader). This book will suck you in and spit you out with the words stuck to your skin to marinade in. I’m obsessed with it and I think you would be too!

Grim Tidings by B.K. Borison

⭐️⭐️⭐️

I had such high hopes for this one but I found it to be just okay. A grim reaper and guardian angel? Absolutely give it to me now. The romance was cute, but the plot just didn’t do it for me and I found the MMCs character to be a bit inconsistent. But I would recommend it as a cute pallet cleanser - it is a quick and fun read.

Also it was not spooky at all?? Maybe that’s my fault for expecting that. That being said - the side characters are some of my faves. I’m obsessed with Aelia. I want a book following her tbh.

Alas, I now find myself looking for a spooky romance book. Drop your recs if you have any below! 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

Hallowed Bones by Lucy Smoke

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

HAPPY RELEASE DAY!!

Hallowed Bones is a why choose paranormal romance that follows Haven, full of grief from losing her parents and freshly accepted to Ipswick College. What Haven hopes will be a new start quickly derails as her nightmares and string of bad luck’ seem to have followed her. Haven meets the Sons of Salem, four fellow students who are rumored to be witches. Haven finds herself inexplicably drawn to these men, who might know more than they’re letting on.

I was lucky enough to receive an early ebook and audio copy of this book. And I have to mention that this audiobook of great! Each of the MMCs have their own narrator and it was very enjoyable to listen to.

I ate this book up. Above all else I love the characters. I’m obsessed with Haven and all of the boys are swoon-worthy. I enjoyed the multiple POVs for the most part, though there were some that I thought were unnecessary. BUT all of the characters felt unique and real, I really enjoyed getting to know them and I can’t wait to see we go in the next book.

Speaking of, the plot was interesting and engaging. I love the mystery surrounding what all is going on and the horror (very light horror, but I would still say horror) elements kept me on the edge of my seat.

I will mention that this book does suffer a little bit from being horny almost all of the time. Still, it wasn’t bad enough to totally take me out of the story or tamp down my enjoyment at all. Plus if I had four hot guys vying for my attention maybe I’d be just as bad, who knows.

I think this book set up the series well. I’m looking forward to what is to come and I hope that we get to see more of Elodie and explore the rules of magic in the world and of course I’m excited to see how things play out with Haven and the Sons of Salem. I would definitely recommend checking this one out! Now to (im)patiently wait for book 2!

🍂September wrap up 🍂

Happy Fall y’all!!! Here’s all the books I read and movies I watched (in theatres)!

I had such a good reading month, everything was 4 stars or higher which I don’t think has ever happened?? Such good books this month that I’m not sure I could even pick a favorite!

I spent a lot of time catching up on the MCU this month with my boyfriend, so I’m not including these here because there would be like 15 more MCU movies 😅 but I am all caught up now and ready for Doomsday in December!

What Feeds Below by Tatiana Schlote-Bonne

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What Feeds Below is a beautiful and grotesque story following Petra, her best friend, Jade, and her estranged childhood friend, Flint, as they journey to the lowest layer of the ‘Void’. The void is filled with lush and terrifying plant life and monsters that challenge their survival at every tum.

I loved this book. For the majority of the time I was oscliating between feeling awe at the lush descriptions and sick to my stomach because of the vivid depiction of the void monsters (among other things). This world was so fascinating to explore, I had a great time.

I can’t review this book without touching on the characters and relationships that are really the heart of this book. All three of our MCs felt so vivd and real to me. Their hopes, aspirations, struggles, grief, all made them so complex and different. Exploring Petra’s relationships with Flint and Jade was so impactful to me that it really made this book feel special.

The ending of this book was of course fantastic. It wrecked me in a way where I know it will be haunting my thoughts for some time.

Please, I beg you, pick up this book if you want a botanical horror/sporror book with a fascinating setting and amazing characters. This is the one for you. And it’s out on October 6th.

A huge thanks to @netgalley and @bindery_books for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Cursed City (Harker Academy book 2) by Kate Golden

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Synopsis:
Viv Abbot will do whatever it takes to rescue Reid Graveheart, the reformed Brood demon she loves—even if it means teaming up with his violent, unpredictable older brother, Deacon. Her uneasy truce with him offers Viv something Reid never could: the chance to embrace her darkness.

My review:
The way I ate this book up should be studied. I am a person who generally struggles with series since I find that the sequel(s) are rarely as good as the first book. This book shattered my expectations and dare I say I liked it more than book 1.

Cursed City was action packed from the start and did not let up. I found myself so glued to these pages that I physically struggled to put it down. The plot was engrossing and well crafted (not perfect, but I had a good time). I love the world the Golden has built, and I love getting to spend time in it. Even better than the world is the vibrant cast of side characters. I’m always having a good time when the whole gang is together, I love the dynamics so much.

The romance is where this book really shone for me. I had no clue about the direction that we were going at the end of book 1, and I was so pleasantly surprised. I adored all of it - especially that the tension is being dragged out. I cannot wait to see how it continues in book 3.

Speaking of book 3... THAT ENDING? I don’t know how I will go so long without answers. What a truly enjoyable continuation of a series. I definitely recommend picking this one up!

Thank you to @netgalley and @acebookspub for providing me with this eARC in exchange for my honest review! And lucky you it’s out tomorrow!

The Kamogawa Food Detectives: A Serving of Hope by Hisashi Kashiwai

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

No surprises here, this book is a blissful respite from the chaos of the world. Another beautiful (and mouthwatering) installment in the Kamogawa Food Detectives series.

We, again, follow Nagare, A chef and the owner of the Kamogawa Diner, and his daughter, Koishi, who heads up the detective agency. A variety of people come to the restaurant to hunt down a dish from their past. Using Koishi’s detective skills and Nagare’s expertise, they recreate the dish for the customer.

Every book in this series is so cozy and introspective. I selfishly love the chef dad and daughter combo (my dad was a chef so it feels very close to home!)

I love meeting each new client and the memories tied to their missing food. I love the little hints we get in each book about Nagare and Koishi, at this point they feel to me like dear friends. And I can’t forget to mention the sleepy cat, Drowsy.

This book will make you slow down a little and revel in little warm fuzzies. Truly a delight of a book. I adore this series with my whole heart.

But be warned: do not read this book while hungry. It will make your mouth water!

Damned if I Do by Alexandria Bellefluer (out September 22nd!)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Damned if I Do follows a demon, Effie, who is newly engaged to fellow demon, Belphagor. Just one issue - Effie is still technically married to her human husband, Finn. Effie must journey to earth to convince Finn to renounce their vows so that she can marry Belphagor. Surely things will go as planned?

The premise of this book was so exciting to me. Humans and demons?
Rekindling love after centuries and multiple reincarnations? I was very into it. And the first half was amazing. I love Effie and Finn seperately and even more together (the banter was so fun)! I loved seeing Effie and Finn’s relationship bloom in real time while also exploring their past life together in small chunks.

I also have to mention that the small town Effie finds herself in is full of amazing side characters. From Finn’s friends to the group of rowdy grandma’s, I adored when we got to see them.

Somewhere around the halfway mark there was a plot point that I prsonally am not a fan of that really affects the rest of the book. Despite that specific point, we do continue to see Effie and Finn’s relationship grow and bloom. The ending climax also feels like it comes pretty late on in the story and the resolution did feel a little rushed. As I was mostly focused on the romance, it wasn’t terrible but it was not the most satisfying conclusion to the overarching plot.

I think this book was a really easy, fun, spicy read with an interesting premise. If you’re looking for a contemporary romance style book with a little supernatural twist I think this one is worth a try!

Outdrawn by Deanna Grey✍️🎨

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finally a 5 star contemporary romance read!!! I’ve been in such a drought when it comes to contemporary romance and I am so pleased that this book is what broke through!

We follow Noah and Sage who are rival artists. For years they’ve been chasing each other on the top charts of the platform they publish their original webtoons on. And now they are hired to work together on a comic.

The rivals to lovers in this was so delectable, I ate that shit up. I loved seeing these two let down their walls to let each other in (did I mention they have history? 👀). We also have some carpal tunnel rep that I thought was handled well, and is something I don’t think I’ve read before in a book.

The backdrop of the art world and touch of workplace romance was perfect for this story, I just loved every second of it!

(That being said, I did try the audiobook for this one and it was not great in my opinion. So I highly recommend grabbing a physical copy or ebook! Plus, the physical copy (not sure about the ebook) has cute illustrations in it!

☀️August Wrap-Up☀️

Here’s what I read and watched this month along with some pics from our vacation to Disney!

This month was so busy and hectic but boy was it a good one! My standout read this month was She’s a Doll - a goofy light horror that was such a blast to read.
My favorite movie this month is Spider-Man: Brand New Day (again because we saw it two more times in theatres 😅). And I got to turn 30 at Disney World! And maybe also bought a house right after (moving is such a pain).

Let’s hope September carries on this energy! And hopefully brings some colder weather as we are still in the high 90s in the Midwest 🥵

What was your top read or watch this month? Any standout memories??
