There’s an inhale-exhale pattern to the shape of this past year, maybe to all of time, space, stars, and every universe: a contraction-expansion, focus-dissipation, condensation-evaporation, a coming together and a dispersal, a concentration of effort and intention and a release into the medium of daily life, as we hold the new year in an open palm before time stretching out in front of us. Containers form to collect our joy and sadness and memories and love, carving channels before melting back into the groundwater. Points of stillness in a swirl of action. The breaking of dawn.

At its best, coffee – by which I mean this whole gotdang thing, the act of creation, service, tasting, cellular integration – is, simply and profoundly, a vehicle for transformation: biochemical, emotional, relational, maybe even spiritual.

What the puck prep are we actually doing here? What is the nature of community, as it brushes the permeable contours of a commercial operation? What is this emergent property that arises within a container deliberately shaped and gently held, that flows in every direction, into, out of, and through it – and how do you solve for that? A community of individuals – who, if I’ve done my job, maybe have nothing to do with me – gazing up at the same eerie moon.

I’m reminded recently of the potency of the grassroots, of activated neighborhood coalescence and deep-local root systems and soil. A real-life, street-level substratum, grounded in presence and relationship. The bioluminescent power to outshine darkness.

Don’t tell anybody, but the coffee at Moonday’s secret heart is a Trojan horse. Sneaky vegetables of ritual and relationship. I am told work is sacred. If you’re reading this, I suspect you’re part of this weird Gödel ant hill consciousness. Thank you. I don’t know what’s bigger, the infinity of a day or the infinity of a year, but I am happy to continue living in fractal spacetime with you.

Happy lunar new year!

One more thing. IG has never been a place where I want to put my energy. I’ll keep hanging out here, but I’m shifting my attention to simpler platforms. Join me at Moon-letters: a sort-of blog/newsletter, visible only by moonlight. by @moondaycoffee

Cycles and circles, rotation, revolution, inhale, hold.

Exhale.

There are times and days when whatever membrane separates surface reality from the numinous becomes thin, when every action is tinged with meaning and ritual. It’s an impulse I’ll occasionally indulge on New Year’s Day: favorite socks, special breakfast, crisp intention. The pesky demons of the last world-cycle – doubt, uncertainty, pressure, agitation – swooped in to harry me with their pointy teeth one last time at the year-end, before being washed away by candlelight and the unseasonable pre-dawn rain. Then, a razor wind, keen and bracing, and the clear light of January.

- – —•— – -

Things slow down a bit now around these parts – a hat tip to relativity, as our planet speeds up through its perihelion today (which, as we all know, is an auspicious time to start something new). Happy Perihelion! We learn to windsurf the spacetime-swells.

@kelseymari_ is dipping out for a bit for some adventure and family time. We will miss her! So we’re trying something a little different. She’s ever-so-graciously left us with a beautiful consolation prize, in the form of a cache of her english muffins and shortbread. You remember those sourdough english muffins – they’re very special. We’ll be toasting them up to order and serving them with really good butter and an array of her spectacular jam, a limited number each day to make them last. I’m low-key pretty charmed by the beauty and simplicity of turning into a tiny muffin shop for a little while. I will try to do right by them.

I’ll be stepping out a little here and there too over the next month or so, prying open cracks of space to charge up in various ways that weave back together and ultimately serve the cause. But mostly here, digging down.

It’s nice being here in 2025 with you! Happy New Year, sweet earthlings. See you out there! by @moondaycoffee

It’s easy for the day-to-day to slip from ritual to routine. You lose sight of the bigger picture, forget to zoom in and out, gross to subtle. At the core, yoga, and service work, are a practice of love. It takes hard work to surrender to the vulnerability of this truth. Practice, teaching, devotion to hospitality – they all work the energy body. The Gita says, śraddhā – faith – “is where one places one’s heart.”

I had started to write this as I was planning to return to India this February, for the first time in about five years. Going back to charge up at the source. (India is an origin country for coffee too.) I’ve had to fight for it, cracking open space, plowing through fear and resistance, deep grooves of attachment and aversion. Sometimes you have to climb a thousand dusty steps and elbow your way through the crowds to receive the blessings.

As anyone who does hospitality work thoughtfully knows, this work is mind-control, holding space a continual refinement of infinitely subtle awareness, an unraveling of layers and patterns of conditioning. If it is to be sustainable, it needs support. Tools need sharpening.

I went last week back to where it began for me, to convene with teachers, as students, bright eyes and open hearts. Guruji, our teacher – our teachers’ teacher – came from India to gather us around him. He died, suddenly, a bolt of lightning to the heart, in our midst, in the mountains, on a beautiful fall day, blue sky and crisp forest air.

The normally subtle conduits that flow between our hearts were torn wide open this past week. We held each other in a bounded, sacred space of healing and true collective self-practice that was almost too powerful for my heart to hold. Yoga only exists in relationship. Community is there. I’m so, so grateful, and I have so much love for you all.

An Occasion, amidst the late summer swirl, like a warm passing current –

It’s been two years of Mari x Moonday!

Community is not an ingredient or a data point, but an emergent property that coalesces around a thing done with love and intention. To our beautiful regulars, who keep showing up for what we’re putting out there: cheers to you, Happy Marimoondayversary, and thank you for supporting this wild seedling of a scheme. I feel no immodesty in claiming we have the best customers. May we continue to nourish each other mutually.

And to @kelseymari_, lest it go unsaid: thank you for gathering good people around us; for sharing and elevating this tiny space; for raising the ceiling for what is possible here; for the constant inspiration; and for the company. I’ll never stop asking for an extra egg on my breakfast sandwich – it leads, apparently, to great adventures.

We’re taking a beat to join @thicket_jewelry up at the @commongroundcountryfair tomorrow, and to celebrate apples and native plants and sheep dogs. Closed this Sunday, see you next week! by @moondaycoffee

✨CLOSED FOR LUNCH✨

Moonday is a human business; on the coffee front, one human, to be precise (hi). As we slip-slide into summer, the thrumming background project of puzzling together an energetically sustainable business presses ever to the forefront, and at the gentle but persistent urging of those close to me who care about my wellbeing – I’m cracking open a lunch break for myself. Call it European, if you like; or a tiny pushback, on behalf of Team Human, against rampant capitalism; or an attempt to tend to my creature-body in a very basic way. I very much hope you’re able to do the same.

Coffee-business is a practice of energy management. Crank a dial here, tighten up over there. Flow rate and temperature. Appropriate agitation. Diligent setup, then (only then) surrender.

The point is to reset, recharge, and continue to enthusiastically show up for you. I think this will help. Here’s the upshot: NEW HOURS are 9–12 and 1–4. Closed noon–1.

Thanks for the love, as always! See you this summer 🩵 by @moondaycoffee

Before.

Tearing your space apart – it’s a weird, deep-rumbling feeling. Jabs you in the solar plexus, where the fire comes from. Entropic unraveling as time travel, peeling back layers, new puzzles uncovering old puzzles uncovering new ones. Touches something old in you, like the smell of your grandma’s house. Lunar new year new moon transition, welcoming the dragon – dust and flame and another trip to the hardware store.

It’s chrysalis time, friends. Come on in. Our little cart was the beating heart of this outfit since the beginning, and it carried us far, all the way to now. A moment of ceremonial gratitude, if you please, for its tiny power and service. But we’ve been on the wrong side of scrappy for a while. It’s going to be a duct-tape-and-string kind of operation in here for a few weeks, while we continue to piece things together and wait for some new equipment and hookups. But we’ll make it work!

Back at it this weekend, meanwhile, and yes, @kelseymari_ will be here – and she’s bringing peaches! So grateful for this photo of the space, which she captured beautifully on (actual) film. Stay tuned for the “After”!

Thanks so much, everyone, for the love and support. Happy year of the dragon – burn bright, y’all 🐉🔥 taken in The Black Box on Washington Ave by @moondaycoffee

We're back, baby!

I’ve been trying to wrap my head around the coffee scene in Seoul. The explosion of coffee shops in the last couple of years, and the level of quality and service at which they operate, is pretty staggering. Modern Korean coffee culture emerged out of the grand tradition of super sweet instant coffee, then the inevitable arrival of S-bucks in 1999, which led to a handful of folks planting the seed for the specialty movement, in the late aughts. There are currently on the order of 19,000 (!) coffee shops in Seoul, and the world barista championship will be held in Busan next year. When Korean people get into something, we really get into it.

Things work a little differently there. A lot of coffee shops don’t open till 10 or even noon, and many stay open till 9 or 11 at night. The most common drink by far is a black iced americano, year-round. There is basically no batch drip coffee to be seen, but most fancy places offer a menu of hand pours.

I had a beautiful time hanging with @bkwashere, a legit coffee rockstar and pioneer of Korean specialty, who helped launch @coffeelibrekorea, and later, in 2014, @fritzcoffeecompany. I’d been following Fritz from afar for a while; it turns out BK and I are connected through our respective cousins! It was an incredibly gracious hospitality experience, and deeply inspiring. Their coffee and bread/pastry programs are amazing, and they’re doing something special with their design, branding, company culture (“internal branding”), and direct trade practices. It’s a soulful company, infused with heart and respect at every layer. You can tell when you visit their shops – they are those magical spaces that you never want to leave.

It was super fun and inspiring skipping around visiting shops, meeting folks, and talking talk. Special shoutout to @cashmere.coffee, whose tiny shop, operated by a brother and sister who are roasting, baking treats, and holding it down in a tiny space tucked away on a quiet street, I felt a special kinship with.

Moonday is back open on Thursday! I’m excited to bring some of this energy back into our space. It’ll be good to see everybody – I’ve missed your faces!

Happy equinox, sweet earthlings! Fall this year feels like a crystallization, a resolving of hazy edges and soft air. There’s a fresh snap to the (very) early-morning – outside, inside, within. As above, so below. The flame burned hot this summer; thanks, everybody, for bringing the kindling and love – your bright eyes keep the fire lit.

Extra big thanks to @kelseymari_ for partying with us all summer! And to Mari devotees, for picking up what we’re putting down. There’s much more Mari x Moonday goodness to come!

I’m taking a big step back and around for a family trip to Korea. Aigo, it’s been a long time! So – we’ll be closed for the next two weeks. Back at it Thursday, October 12.

The delightful little cups pictured here were made for us by our pals (and @tbbwashington alumni!) @campfire.pottery! They’re about 4.5 oz./130 ml., perfect for a sweet baby cortado, a little ice cream, a handful of pecans, or 561 coffee beans. Available in the shop when we re-open (and online, maybe soon)!

Hold it down, Portland – I’ll miss you! See you soon 🤍 by @moondaycoffee

Friends,

We're raising money this weekend for the Hawaii wildfire response. You might remember the spectacular Hawaiian Chocolate Shortbread @kelseymari_ was making a while back. Well, she's gotten her hands on more of that @manoachocolate, which is produced, bean-to-bar, in Hawaii. As long as the chocolate lasts, all proceeds from Hawaiian Shortbread sales will go to the Maui Strong Fund, which provides resources focusing on disaster response and recovery on Maui. Most of Kelsey's family lives in Hawaii – they're all safe, thankfully, but the heartbreak is close to home.

In addition, THIS WEEKEND, 10% of all in-store Moonday and @thicket_jewelry sales, plus all tips, will be donated. More info on Maui Strong @hawaiicommunityfoundation and hawaiicommunityfoundation.org.

Thanks, everybody! Come on out! 💛 by @moondaycoffee

Happy Strawberry Festival!

@kelseymari_ has been fervently hoarding fruit, and has pulled from her dreams an all-strawberry menu to celebrate the tiny, ephemeral beating heart of summer in all its luscious glory. Pre-orders are LIVE for this weekend! Follow the link in Kelsey’s bio to order. (Psst, hey, and since we’re all friends here, there may be some special made-to-order surprise treats at the shop on Sunday.) Eat a galette, run screaming into the ocean, have a little too much coffee, embrace overheating, kiss a dog on the snoot, get jam in your hair, let free your strawberry heart! by @moondaycoffee
