This dramatic story from our national parks is a powerful reminder that these are places for ALL Americans to experience.

When I plan a national park trip, I always look for a little advice. I don’t want a full itinerary planned out for me—just a little inspiration.

That’s why I’m excited to be partnering with @moonguides to share their new book, Adventures of a Lifetime: Extraordinary Experiences in America’s National Parks. This is exactly the kind of resource that I use to kickstart my trip-planning process. Through gorgeous images and quick-hits of information, it recommends experiences in all 63 national parks. Each is just enough to launch your own, unique adventure.

It really is a must-have for anyone who loves planning their own, unique adventures in the national parks. Comment “Adventures” and I’ll send you the link to check it out + a code for 25% off! by @moonguides

For a relaxing retreat where you can truly get away from it all, look no further than Washington’s San Juan Islands. The San Juans are accessible by ferry or plane and are a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and wildlife watchers.

Here are our top recs for what to do:
🐋 Whale-watching: The San Juan Islands are one of the best places in the world to see whales in their natural habitat. Orcas can be spotted throughout the year, but also keep an eye out for humpbacks, minke whales, and even gray whales.

⚓ Lighthouse-hopping: On San Juan Island, check out the historic lighthouses, like this one in Lime Kiln Point State Park that dates back to 1919. (It’s also the best spot on the island to spot whales and porpoises from dry land!)

🥾 Hike to stunning views: On Orcas Island, hike to the top of Mount Constitution in Moran State Park and enjoy the highest peak in the San Juan Islands.

Ready to go? Check out Visit San Juans for more info, and be sure to get your copy of Moon Pacific Northwest to plan your getaway—available wherever books are sold.

I still buy printed guidebooks. On purpose. 📚

When you have zero free time, the internet is the worst place to plan a trip. 40 open tabs, 5 conflicting “must-do” lists, and half of them are paid influencer spots.

One local expert already did the hard work. I grab a realistic 4-day itinerary, pick our spots, and close the book. No rabbit holes. No algorithms.

Save this for the next time vacation planning feels like a second job. 💛

Drop your next trip destination in the comments and I’ll tell you which guide I’d grab.

Few places capture the magic of fall quite like Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As the weather gets cooler and the leaves change, the mountains are painted in brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold.

Make the most of the vibrant landscape and explore the winding roads of Cades Cove, take in the views as you cruise down Newfound Gap Road, wander through the forests around Kuwohi, or follow the scenic Alum Cave Bluffs Trail. From misty valleys to color-soaked mountain ridges, every corner of the Smokies comes alive in fall. ⛰️

A visit to the Big Island of Hawaii promises island life at its most authentic: limited tourist crowds, peace and quiet, and unique natural wonders like black sand beaches, lush rainforests, and an active volcano.

Want to plan your getaway? Take the advice of local author Laurie Lyons-Makaimoku, whose Big Island guidebook is out now:

💚 Planning a trip isn't just about building an itinerary and checking off a bucket list. It's about understanding the social and cultural nuances of this place.

🪸 Visitors should understand the importance of maintaining their distance from wildlife, using reef safe sunscreen, and limiting their trash, in order to minimize their impact.

📚 Many places on the island, especially the more remote areas, don't have service. That's where your copy of Moon Best of Big Island comes in handy! 😉

Check it out at the link in our bio.

With Route 66 celebrating its 100th birthday this year, it’s the perfect time to chat with Moon Route 66 Road Trip author and expert road-tripper Jessica Dunham about the legendary Mother Road.

Q: What do you love about driving this route to do research for your book?

A: “My favorite thing about Route 66 are the people who call the Mother Road home. They are small-business owners, hotel operators, restaurateurs, historians—friendly folk who are passionate about sharing the odd, quirky, delightful, beautiful, one-of-a-kind, only-on-Route-66 curios and experiences with travelers from around the world.”

Q: What makes Route 66 unique?

A: “Route 66 is not a static destination. It’s not one single place; rather it’s a coterie of people and communities connected across the miles, and across the decades. It’s the road trip that defines all road trips—an ambitious and meandering route that embodies freedom and adventure and new frontiers.”

Q: Favorite place to grab a bite?

A: “I always stop in Seligman, Arizona, at Delgadillo’s Snow Cap for ice cream. It’s a legendary, family-owned snacks shop where the staff’s punny humor and silly gag jokes are almost more of a draw than the food.”

Q: How about something surprising or unexpected along Route 66?

A: “The Art Deco architectural tour in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was a real surprise gem for me. I had no idea that the city was built by oil barons who invested money into constructing some of the most impressive Art Deco buildings in the country.”
