Slow weekends. Making pottery takes your mind off to a good place! Painting pots in my Ceramics Taster Class. We use hand building and well as the wheel.

This is the lovely Baker family. On Saturday they came to the pottery. This is an annual activity they enjoy.

Two hours of creative play time sculpting clay monsters and then trying their hand at throwing on the potters wheel. Add the finishing touch of some colourful slip decoration et voila! Masterpieces and memories 💚 thank you for sharing this time with me.

Throw a mini moon Jar with me.

This form originates from Korea. Usually they are much larger vessels, traditionally made from porcelain. The large round shape resembles a full moon.

Here I am making forms inspired by that. Only much smaller. After centering the clay I make the first lift. I then shape it into a small cylinder. Then I start to belly it out to create that lovely rounded shape. The final touch is to clean up the rim (here I use a pin tool). Et voila!

Here is one of the first pieces I made from clay.

My nan was going to pottery classes and managed to persuade her tutor to give her some clay so that I could have a play.

I loved horses and was so inspired to make this little foal. It’s survived all these years and is a treasured memory.

It’s not always about the finished result, but it is always about expression and playing!

Come and play at a pottery class with me. Switch off, relax and enjoy making. You never know what you might discover!

Relax, unwind and get creative. A two day pottery wheel course for beginner and improver potters to immerse yourself in the process and hone those throwing skills.This is a great progression course if you’ve done a taster class and want to deepen your understanding of throwing.

Day one covers the fundamentals of throwing cylinders and bowls in the morning. The afternoon you’ll progress onto shaping the basic cylinder into other forms, working more at your own pace. If you already understand the foundations, we can look at refining and honing skills to help you progress.

Day two, your pots will be dry enough to tidy up. Learn how to trim and turn foot rings and refine the form of your pots. You’ll be amazed how this can transform a pot. There will be the opportunity to throw a few more practice pieces too.

You can expect to make lots of pots, and choose three to be fired and glazed with one of the studio glazes.

A beautiful sea of pottery

I just love seeing them all together like this! The different forms - cups, bowls, jugs, vases. Tall pots and curved shapely pots and everything in between.

This is several classes pieces all together on the bench. Ready to be loaded into the kiln. The powdery matt surface will transform in the firing to a glossy satin matte glaze.

We have been really enjoying exploring layering glazes to great effect.

These beautiful ceramic wares have been collected by their makers I can share!

Using a mix of dipping and brush on glazes to build up layers of colours. This method can be really good to produce unique finishes.

If you’re keen to have an introduction to glazing - we cover the basics on my 5 week throwing course. Suitable for beginners and improvers you’ll lean to throw cups, bowls and jugs. Then refine the final pieces by trimming and turning.
The last week you’ll get to glaze and add that finishing touch!

Kiln Tetris- a fun game potters play when loading pots into the kiln.
These are some of the pieces made by potters on my 12 weeks course. They’ve been bisc fired and are going in for the final glaze firing. That powdery surface is glaze and it will melt in the kiln and come out as a shiny layer of coloured glass! I share some pictures of the finished pieces next week.
