Who is moore.speeed? A college long jumper and sprinter breaking down the sports science behind speed and power.

🏀 I’m 5’8” and grew up chasing a dunk. Learning force production got me a 47” running vertical and a spot jumping for Coast Guard.

“You’d never expect to pass a test you didn’t study for. So why treat your sport any differently?”

🔵 Trap bar jumps: 4x5

🔵 Back squat, fast up: 5x3

🔵 Nordic hamstring curls: 3x6

🔵 Fast leg raises

The long jump penultimate step is where the jump is really set up. It lowers your hips so you can push up at takeoff without braking.

🎵 The rhythm goes long, then short: a slightly longer penultimate and a quick last step.

⚡ Speed matters, but only speed you can control. Run as fast as you can still hit your positions.

The first 10 seconds of a sprint run on the ATP-PCr system. Here’s how it fuels your speed and where creatine fits in.

⚡ ATP powers every contraction, but you only store 2-3 seconds of it.

🔵 Phosphocreatine rebuilds ATP in one fast step.

🧪 Creatine raises your PCr stores so you can train harder.

Low heel recovery in sprint acceleration: why it matters out of the blocks, and why it isn’t always necessary.

🦶 Early on, a low foot gets back to the ground fast so you keep pushing.

📈 As you rise and speed up, your heel climbs on its own. That’s normal.

⚡ Heel height is a result. Pushing hard is the goal.

Top speed sprint form breakdown using my own 10m fly. What I do well and the one thing I’m cleaning up.

✅ Tall posture, strong knee drive, arms that match my legs, and a solid touchdown.

❌ My leg opens up early in flight, so I have to pull it back to land well.

🛠️ The fix: step over the knee and strike down under the hips. Wicket runs help.

Athlete nutrition is something I got wrong for years. As a jumper I thought lighter was always better, but underfueling only made me weaker.

⛽ You’d never drive a car with no gas. Your body is the same.

📉 Underfueling lowers power, slows recovery and raises injury risk.

🌱 Young athletes need even more fuel to build muscle and bone.

Is sprint speed in your genes? ACTN3, the “speed gene,” makes a protein found only in fast-twitch muscle fibers.

🧬 Elite sprinters are 3x less likely to carry the XX version that makes none of it.

📊 But ACTN3 explains only about 2-3% of the differences in muscle performance.

💪 Training still decides most of your speed.

Forward lean is how sprint acceleration really works. It’s not just how hard you push, it’s where you point that force.

📐 Lean from the ankles in a straight line so your push goes back, not up.

🔬 Research shows horizontal force matters more than total force for sprint speed.

🦶 Out of the blocks, land under or behind your hips on the ball of the foot.

You can’t be fast if you aren’t strong. Every stride is a push into the ground, and strength powers that push.

🔵 Faster runners hit the ground harder, not quicker.

🔵 Stronger athletes produce force faster in the 0.1s your foot is down.

💪 Lift heavy with fast intent 2-3x a week.

The best long jumpers aren’t jumping up. They’re leaving the board as fast as possible.

🚀 Approach speed predicts distance more than anything. Elite takeoff angles are only about 20 degrees.

🛑 Reaching for the board creates big braking forces. Plant flat and active under your hips.

🎵 Keep a consistent rhythm with a longer second-to-last step.

Plyometrics are not about doing as many jumps as possible. They train your body to act like a spring, and that only works when every contact is fast.

🔵 The goal: Plyos make your tendons stiffer so they return more energy on every contact, and they train you to produce force faster. Both matter for sprinting and jumping.

🔵 Intensity: Every rep should be max intent with a quick, quiet contact. Build from pogos and hops up to bounds and depth jumps.

🔵 Volume: Count foot contacts. 80 to 140 per session is plenty, with 48 to 72 hours between plyo days.

💪 Strength still matters. Plyos teach you to use force fast, but lifting is what builds that force in the first place. You need both.

📌 Save this for your next plyo day and send it to a teammate who does way too many jumps.

💬 Questions about plyometrics? Drop them in the comments.
