Shadowplay Carriage House — Whitefish, Montana.

A small building with a lot going on.

The first completed piece of a larger project, the carriage house gave us a chance to play with scale, proportion, light, and a little bit of drama. Dark and restrained from the outside, things get more layered and unexpected as you move in.

A client with a strong vision—and the willingness to take a few chances—made this one especially fun to design.

More from Shadowplay to come.

Introducing Field Notes.

We’ve wanted a place on the Mor.Shi site for the things that don’t quite fit into a project page—details we’re working through, materials and fabrication, buildings and ideas we keep coming back to, and the occasional rabbit hole.

The first Field Note starts at home.

When our son discovered our open stair, we needed to make it a little less open. What started as a practical problem turned into a perforated steel screen based on a photograph of the aspens outside our window—and, unexpectedly, a continuation of an idea I’ve been playing with for nearly twenty years.

Aspens in the Stair is the first post in Field Notes. Now on the site.

A room that truly lives up to this quote by Juan Montoya, “A room should never allow the eye to settle in one place. It should smile at you and create fantasy.”

We are so so so excited to see Dennae's vision of @biome.slowcraft come together at the new location by some of our local favorites, @finksdeli and @wildcrumb and @treelinecoffee!

We worked with Dennae to design, build, and pick out the wood for the custom shelves and print stand to showcase the beautiful work done by 120+ artists.

Make sure to give @biome.slowcraft a visit! 🐌🎨 by @mor.shi.studio
