A parent is one of the most significant contributors to a child’s environment.

Before the world begins to influence your child, you are already shaping their understanding of love, values, character, and life. The atmosphere you create at home, the words you speak, the behaviours you model, and the company you permit all contribute to their development.

You cannot blame the world for shaping what you have refused to nurture at home.

Parenting goes beyond providing food, shelter, and education. It is also about intentionally creating an environment where a child can grow in wisdom, character, discipline, and the knowledge of God.

What kind of environment are you creating for the child you are praying will become a godly adult?

I had the beautiful opportunity to speak to children aged 9–12 about Emotional Intelligence and why it matters.

One thing this experience reminded me of is how important it is to teach children emotional intelligence from a young age. We teach them how to read, write, solve problems, and excel academically, but how often do we teach them how to understand their emotions, communicate their feelings, process difficult experiences, and respond to others with empathy?

The responses I got from these children were both eye-opening and thought-provoking. It reminded me that sometimes, children aren’t necessarily lacking the ability to express themselves; they simply haven’t been given the language, knowledge, or safe spaces to do so. Too often, children are told to stop crying, keep quiet, don’t be angry, or don’t talk back without being taught how to understand and manage what they feel.

Children deserve to be heard, understood, and equipped emotionally, not just corrected behaviourally.

Emotional intelligence isn’t something we should wait until adulthood to teach. It is a foundation for healthy relationships, self-awareness, emotional regulation, and overall human development.

And perhaps, if we start teaching children how to understand themselves early enough, we will raise adults who understand themselves and others better.

This is a conversation we need to have more often. This is one thing my kids @rtbsm_kidhood enjoy!✨❤️
