Every stylist needs a best friend make up artist and mine was Laura Mitchell. I met her on my first test shoot in New York. I noticed her skill with doing clean bright skin with a bold lip, a look that later became her personal signature.
She made me feel like working with me was an honor, even if we were doing some low paid commercial “if you’re there, I’m in”
As we became better friends we recognized a lot of synchronicities in the way we grew up and our values and dreams. She blurred the lines between best friend, older sister and partner in crime. And our friendship became more about encouraging each other to be the people we really wanted to become and to settle for nothing less.
She was one of my first calls when I booked a job, met my husband, got engaged, moved. She was also one of my first calls when I messed up a job, broke up with a guy or was just struggling to pay my rent.
Our adult lives seemed to mirror each other and we shared a mutual admiration as we both settled in our careers, got married and as Laura went on to have a baby.
It’s been barely 2 years since she shared with me that she was having neurological problems. Before even her ALS diagnosis. It’s been heart breaking to realize that all the dreams she shared with me were vaulted in their tracks.
And now, I don’t have my mirror, my friend who always knew what I was going through and never let me forget my worth, doesn’t get to be here to go through it with me.
Even though our time was cut short, it was truly an honor. You are the best. And I wouldn’t have had it want other way. by @more.daninyc
