internship | report

selected pages of my finished internship report! having mixed feelings about this, i’ve spent evenings working on this, spent so much time on it, and now it’s done! not my internship - i’ll be in utrecht til august. it feels kind of weird to reflect upon my time here and say goodbye to a place where i’ll be for another two months. is it possible to feel nostalgic for a time that is still going on? anyways, i am very proud of this report regardless if i pass or not. i poured my heart in soul in this beautiful handmade little book 💞 and i’ve been having a truly wonderful time at my internship - learning about production and art and exhibitions and everything that comes before and after an event! looking forward to upcoming programs and exhibitions :)

(some text of this is blurred for privacy reasons, and these are selected pages! the report consists of about 40 pages, a5 format)

interdisciplinary projects | there is no away: a handbook for eco-social futures

for this collaboration project, a group of roughly 30 students was divided into smaller interdisciplinary teams. each team researched an “away”: systems or things or beings that disappear, are invisible, are taken for granted. these nine aways were combined into one handbook on eco-social futures.

Pigeon Pity - consisting of Ragonda van den Berg, Jay Geerts, Marit Jansen and Denisa Negoita - researched city pigeons. from the starting point of extinction (where do animals that go instinct go?), we started to research on how to create empathy for the city pigeon. with as a goal, to prevent their extinction.

using research methods such as countermapping, care mapping, score and recipe, we dove into the life of the city pigeon. our chapter has general information on the city pigeon as well as explanation on how they got to the city, how they used to be our companions, and how the disappearance of many (wild) pigeon breeds is a result of human interference.

in this post are a couple of photos of the chapter and the process.

theory | design frictions: social ecologies

final video of my research project for my theory classes “design frictions: social ecologies”. I researched the calmness people feel when they are in nature. using deep listening as the main research method, I dove into the sounds of the world and the feelings we feel because of them

elective | listening otherwise: slime molds

elective at the living station (the coolest place at school to me), learning about slime molds, a trip to radius in delft, taking my slime mold billy home with me, panicking because he grew mold, transferring a healthy part of him to a new petri dish after the weekend, putting him in a dehydrated stage until i want to collaborate with him again.

taking care of a living organism like this and forming a bond was very interesting. things like feeling bad about forgetting him if i was at work or when he grew mold to desperately cutting out pieces of the agar agar the mold was growing on - then thinking “is this the right way to handle it?”. placing oats very deliberately to try to lead him away from the mold, and billy ignoring those oats and growing towards the mold instead.

i’ve learned a lot from this experience and gained new insights into collaborating with living organisms and the nature world!
