It’s that time of year! This is our 2026 @nprmusic Tiny Desk Contest Submission (our 7th time submitting!)

We Should Take Off Our Clothes - performed in Théo’s and Márk’s childhood home in Belmont, California.

We were SO close to not recording this song, but man am I glad we did.

The story starts with an impromptu songwriting session we had where Théo came up with this hook out of the blue; and it stuck with me like an old friend, the kind of friend you don’t talk to too often; but when you do, it’s like they’ve been there all along. That hook just had an indescribable feeling of freedom and nostalgia. There was no doubt that we had a nice and tasty morsel. But alas, it was no full meal.

Over the years, we occasionally set aside some time to try to crack the code on this song; but that day never came. So when we had some extra time in the studio, we were hesitant to give it another try. Most of us figured it was just a big old waste of time. After all, if we’d come up empty for years, why would that be any different in the studio, where time was even more precious?

That day, I think we were all just feeling inspired after being in a deep creative flow for a whole week. It all came together quickly, easily, and with all the joy our little hearts could muster.

I seriously hope you all enjoy it, and I hope it inspires you as it did to us.

I’m very into songs with a pulsing drive. Those songs that give you an urge to move - not in a dancey way but in a one foot in front of the next kind of way. As I’m writing this, my minds going a little blank - there are many but the only one I can think of now is “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”. Man would I bump that song back in the day.

For the longest time, I’ve wanted to make a song that gives that feeling. That feeling of forward motion, unstoppable forward motion.

Biking Song is one of those patchwork songs. The chorus came from a period in late 2020 where I was posting a little song idea everyday to my story. I think I made it 20 days or so but it yielded a couple little trinkets that are still with me. This was a time of intense freedom for me. Responsibilities were few and far between and the days unfolded in a dreamlike way - I remember sunset bike rides  through El Sereno with Goose and Oskar, going to Manhattan beach with friends, driving out to Joshua Tree solo and sleeping in Bertha the band van. It wasn’t all rosy though - the other side of this coin was an aimlessness that crept in and out. But still, I felt like I could go wherever the wind blew. I think deep inside I knew that it wouldn’t last forever and there was some growing up to do but I wanted desperately to fight it and keep exploring and playing and adventuring. That’s the song that eventually emerged. It’s a celebration of this feeling, this life, but also a desperate clinging to something that feels fleeting - that has always been the “You” in the chorus for me. And finally it ends with the acknowledgement that part of growing up is slowing down, taking more care, being more intentional (still working on all of this!!). Booo how boring but it’s also sweet and soft and beautiful. And you can always still go out and ride a bike. If you take anything from this song, let it be that. Riding a bike with friends feels so so good. Go do it and wear your helmet. - Théo

some days my engine stalls
I lay on clouds with no power to lift up
my hum replaced by silence
and so l sink
my body at ease
my soul prickling with shame
broken in two

I wrote this poem when I was in my last year of college. At the time, I was experiencing what I now recognize as my first encounter with depression. I remember feeling so ashamed that I couldn’t get myself to get up and get better. I was too embarrassed to tell anyone - not even my closest friends or my family. It wasn’t until I wrote it down on paper that I realized what it was.

Three years later, when I was living with the band down in LA, I rediscovered the poem. I remember listening to “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding that same day and thinking, what a beautiful, beautiful song about such a sad, hopeless, lonely feeling.. I had maybe listened to that song 100s of times before and always felt joy... And realizing a sad song doesn’t have to make you sad or even sound sad was freeing to me. And so bit by bit, I took that tiny little poem and started setting it to music. That was the birth of “Desert Man”.

It’s about being in that deep dark place, and slowly but surely lifting yourself out of it by choosing to see the beauty all around you. It can be a struggle but it’s made a lot easier by letting those who love you in on it. - Théo

On the surface, “Infinity” is a break-up song - but it started out as the opposite.

I wrote the song in May, 2024. Goose and Morgan were visiting Paris and staying with me for a week. At the end of a lowkey evening jam with Goose, I jokingly played a simple chord progression and spontaneously sang “how many songs can I write on this chord progression? The answer is infinity”. I laughed and was surprised at how much I had enjoyed that moment, so I kept going. A few days later, I finished the song. At the time, I was in a long-term relationship and reflecting on what it means to truly love somebody - which for me is helping whoever you love live out their heart’s path in a free way.

I was really inspired when my more fatter brothers proposed recording the song for our fourth album months later. When I look back, there were two main emotional currents flowing within me as I recorded this song with the dudes in August. First, the joy of realizing that by taking the leap and stepping away from More Fatter for three years, I had set myself up to rejoin my dear brothers, with a deepened, refreshed connection to music and what it meant to me. Secondly, the beginning of truly accepting that it was time for me to end my relationship with my long-time friend and boyfriend at the time. We broke up about a month later.

“Homerun” was my farewell song to More Fatter.

It started with a melody that my friend and songwriter, @endjacksymes , sang to me in a dream. At the time, I had decided to leave the fat haus in LA and move back in with my parents in San Francisco temporarily. It was a few months after Covid hit, I was struggling emotionally, and feeling an identity crisis at the idea of stepping away from More Fatter.

The morning after the dream, I sang the melody to Tommy, and he came up with chords on the guitar. We started writing lyrics. On the surface, it turned into a story about a little baseball that was playing in its final game before retiring, dreaming of being hit out of the park - and a little girl going to her first baseball game with her mom, dreaming of catching a fly ball. Tommy, Théo, and I used to play epic games of baseball in his backyard when we were kids - and we were big time SF Giants fans. Théo helped us figure out a heartwarming chorus.

Years later, I had rejoined More Fatter, and we were figuring out the concept for the Homerun lyric video. I was surprised to see that our videographer Zach Bell chose the idea of us slow dancing together in different combinations on a baseball diamond, with one person always the odd one out. One of the reasons I had stepped away from the band in 2020 was that I knew I was queer, and I knew that I had to shift my surroundings to continue the self-acceptance journey. I didn’t feel any homophobia coming from my more fatter brothers, but there was a kind of bro-y vibe in the house that felt increasingly distant to me.

It was surprisingly affirming and moving for me to see Tommy, Goose, Tony, and Théo all so open to this concept Zach had come up with, and then to actually see them slow dancing together. Another reminder for me of the love that is the rock of our band, and how much we’ve evolved as individuals and as a group. - Márk
