check on your loved ones

if you went to a middle school, high school, or college in the U.S., chances are you’ve seen one of those suicide prevention videos. maybe it was one of those videos from the early 2000s that somehow gets pulled out every year, followed by the same questions and the same conversation about warning signs.

we’re taught to look for the person who suddenly withdraws from life. the person who stops talking to their friends, stops showing up, isolates themselves, or has an obvious change in behavior.

but what about the people who don’t?

i’m here to show the other side of the coin.

with another year and another september, i’m reminded of where i was in february of 2025. i looked back at what i posted, what i was doing, and the memories i was making. from the outside looking in, i seemed like a completely normal teenager figuring out life. i was smiling and laughing with friends, going to job interviews, going out, and living my life.

in the days leading up to it, i wasn’t withdrawing from life. i was creating memories. if anything, i noticed i was taking more pictures and videos with the people i loved.

people who struggle with suicidal thoughts aren’t always the people who withdraw from life. sometimes, they continue living it right up until the final moments.

i was very lucky.

i remember having to call my parents and tell them that i was going to be admitted, voluntarily or involuntarily. when i went home, the tension, confusion, and anxiety were thick enough to cut through.

my parents sat me down and asked why i hadn’t spoken up or reached out.

i didn’t want to feel like a burden or another weight on their shoulders. i knew everyone was going through something and had enough on their plates already.

there were tears and uncertainty in those final moments at home. what should i pack? could i be trusted to shower by myself? what phone numbers should i be able to call while i was there?

the drive there was awkward. none of us really knew what to say or what to do.

the last thing i ate before going in was a frosty from wendy’s. it’s such a small, random detail, but i remember it.
