“1937”
My Senior Thesis Collection!

“1937,” is a look into the profound and often overlooked history of denim within African American culture.

Beginning with the fundamental truth that the blue denim we recognize today has its origins in the forced labor and remarkable skill of enslaved African Americans.

Enslaved Africans brought the knowledge of indigo cultivation and dye extraction with them to the Americas, a practice that colonizers exploited to create the very fabric that became synonymous with durability and, tragically, with the attire of the enslaved.
This collection reclaims that narrative, celebrating the resilience embedded in denim’s fibers.

Beyond the historical roots, “1937” draws deeply from the personal style of the incredible women in my family from Philadelphia and Nashville, Tennessee. Their elegance, strength, and unique ways of dressing have always captivated me, shaping my understanding of feminine style.
This collection is also inspired by the vibrant energy of Black culture, particularly its immense influence on streetwear globally.

What emerges is my collection that blends the boldness of streetwear with an undeniable feminine touch, demonstrating denim’s incredible versatility. It challenges the notion that denim is solely for casual wear, showcasing how this historically significant material can be transformed into pieces that are sophisticated, rtistic, and capable of expressing a wide range of styles, all while honoring its history.

Thank you to my Grandmom who was the matriarch of our family and continually being a huge inspiration for me in everything I do, along with all of the women in my family.
