Saguaro is here!

Illustrated by @gabydalessandro, written by @laekanzeakemp, and published today from @holidayhousepeachtree, Saguaro is a picture book honoring Mexican-American heritage and family legacy. The story draws a connection between the slow and steady growth of the towering saguaro cacti and the growth of the child, who will one day follow his Abuelo’s footsteps and beyond.

“D’Alessandro’s rich artwork favors purples, pinks, and greens to depict rather dreamlike landscapes between grounded scenes of rancho life. Above all, the saguaros loom in different sizes, angles, and impressions.” — Kirkus Reviews

Check out @holidayhousepeachtree where Gaby recently shared some of her process and inspiration in working on the book.

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!

Just published last week, Ruth Muskrat and the So-Called Indian Problem is a picture book that shares the true story of a singular woman at the heart of the Native American civil rights movement. Illustrator Rebecca Lee Kunz and author Jen Loren — sisters and citizens of the Cherokee Nation — came together to tell the story of their great great Aunt Ruth Muskrat Bronson.

The “Indian Problem”―that was the term used by the government in the 19th and 20th centuries. What to do with the hundreds of Native nations and tribes in and around the United States? When the goal wasn't destruction, it was assimilation.

But Native people had their own plans―and one Cherokee woman, Ruth Muskrat Bronson, helped lead that charge. A poet, educator, and activist, Ruth knew that Native Americans could and should fight for their civil rights while still retaining their tribal identities. Speaking in front of the President to gain Native citizenship, penning groundbreaking poems and books, founding and leading the National Congress of American Indians, she left a legacy that still blazes brightly today.

Happy publication day to I PAINT MY WORLD, Illustrated by Susan Gal @susangaldraws, written by debut author Esther Novak @enovak109, and published by @behrman_house @applesandhoneypress.

In this gentle story, a young child discovers that his feelings can color the way he experiences everyday ups and downs throughout the seasons. Much like a painter selecting from a colorful palette, we all have power to choose how we react to the world around us.

From @publisherswkly Starred Review:
"Different kinds of seasonal and emotional weather follow, as exuberant, thick brushstrokes of color literalize the title’s promise and envelop the reader in the dawning of agency and responsive joy."

From @sljournal:
"Vibrant illustrations bring this concept vividly to life. The art, rendered in acrylic, watercolor, pencil, and ink, is bold with expressive brushstrokes; full of motion and expression, each scene reflects the tone of the season and mirrors the child’s changing perceptions.”

With the Mid-Autumn Festival approaching, @victongai collaborated with @maximsproducts on a limited edition package design for their lava custard mooncakes. The ornate piece depicts Victo's vision of an “intricate contraption” transforming and refining liquid moonlight into mooncakes.

The Water Carriers: A Journey Through Cherokee History and the Secret Life of Rivers.

Professor of history @gregory_smithers provides an illuminating journey through Cherokee history and an ancient tradition that can change how we understand our world. In Southern Appalachia, rivers, which Cherokees called Long Person—or Ganvhidv Yvwi—moved the earth and excavated mountains to reveal fertile valleys. Smithers highlights how Long Person drew Cherokees and their Indigenous ancestors to the water’s edge where they nurtured an enduring bond with the river.
