I believe you’re allowed to make room for individuality in your faith. Some things taught (even with good intentions) are not exactly doctrine. And for you to feel comfortable in your faith, you might have to unlearn some things (if you need to) that are just cultural.

When I was younger, I thought being a “good” Latter-day Saint meant fitting into a really specific mold.

But now, as a mom, I’ve learned:

•You can wear pants to church- We’re just asked to dress nicely! 👖⛪️
•You can wear a cross- Our lives should be the symbol of our religion, but there’s nothing wrong with wearing one. ✝️
•You can honor the Sabbath in ways that are sacred to your family- We are asked to keep it holy and unspotted from the world. What does that mean to you? 🙏
• You can listen to different Christian music- The hymns are beautiful and Mormon Tabernacle Choir will make me cry but sometimes I like to hear other styles of music that are uplifting too. 🎶
•You don’t need to explain the length of your shorts or what swimsuit you want to wear- We didn’t make your covenants with God. You did. You don’t owe anyone an explanation. 🩱👙
•You can show up just as you are- He loves YOU on the path you’re currently on. He knows YOUR heart. Don’t feel pressured to follow someone else’s. 💙

Because your decisions are personal, just like your relationship with Him. 🤍

And by people I mean his family 😂 - One of my biggest fears in dating was that I wouldn’t be able to find a guy who would love me and my daughter unconditionally AND have his family be accepting of us.

Of course, Heavenly Father knew this. And with His sense of humor, I ended up meeting Riley’s parents and siblings at church before I ever met him!

They babysat Ellie, made me feel welcome at church again, and we even had our own inside jokes already.

Once Riley and I met and had a first date one morning, his family invited me and Ellie out to dinner with them the same night haha. I was hoping he hasn’t sick of me already!

Game nights were filled with diaper changes, dinners always had a high chair, and sitting with us at church meant entertaining a baby, but no one ever had a problem with our situation.

I was met with love and support from him, his family, and the whole ward. As it should be!

Choose to be kind. Choose to see others as Jesus would. Love them. Encourage them. Be an example. And let them live their life with Him guiding their individual path. Trust in the Holy Ghost and in the power that the temple offers us as we continue to go back each time and learn. Do not push others further from Him. 🤍

We are imperfect people doing what we can. Including our leaders. They don’t always have the answers for us. And that’s okay. I didn’t expect him to fully know. I wanted his thoughts. We are individuals using our agency to help guide us. It’s great if others can help us and it’s okay if they can’t. Maybe our own answers will help guide someone else someday. 🤎

A ministering brother, your dad, a family friend, etc. 🤍 It’s okay if it’s not the dad or if it doesn’t happen right away. My baby was blessed by our home teacher at the time when she was six months old. I’m still really glad we did it. Sending you love mama.🫶🏻

You never know what you’re going to miss back home once you get stationed overseas. These guys just wanted homemade bread. They didn’t care what kind. 🤍
