sunday thoughts from mountain church //
i hit the trails today with a heavy heart. along the way i ran into an old muslim man hiking in full religious garb. he was an an 8 year journey spending time in nature across the country. we shared the trail for awhile, talking about life. i came away from our conversation with some thoughts :

1. love as an energy is never wasted. even if it’s unappreciated, unseen, discarded, or ends in grief or a hole or heartbreak. the energy goes on as a gift to the world. it’s a soft landing place, even if only for a season. it’s a reminder of god. it’s goodness that can never be destroyed.

2. love is a muscle that has to be chosen over & over again. it takes courage to keep living in the practice of love & to keep taking that path in spite of fear, discomfort, hardship, or monotony. if we want to be useful to god, we have to keep loving others no matter the cost. we have to stay soft, even in our grief. in the words of my dad, “everything worth having is outside of the comfort zone where you could get totally smashed. you have to keep choosing that risk.”

3. those who love will never lose. you may lose a loved one, but you will never lose the love you shared. by @morganmreber
