This month Whitney Hubbs (@lahubbs ) and Jermaine Francis (@jermainefrancisstudio ) explore "Photography Unbound," which looks at the multidisciplinary of the photographic medium, its materiality and spatial potentialities to see its relation to reality.

Spark of a Nail by Morgan Levy @morganrlevy

This is a photographic collaboration with women and non-binary individuals working in the building trades, a historically male-dominated field. Combining performance and documentary strategies, and made across training programs and job sites throughout the U.S., the images foreground moments of collective action, vulnerability, humor, and rest to record a choreography of bodies that seek to describe something rarely seen: women and non-binary people shaping and transforming space of their own volition.

In dialogue with both 20th-century labor photography and feminist photo practices of the 1970s and 80s, the project draws inspiration from and subverts elements from these visual histories to respond to persistent exclusions. Spark of a Nail reveals the building site as a place of transformation, not only in a literal sense, but also in the cultural imagination, using photography's potential to propose alternative collectively built futures.

Levy is a photo-based artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Her work is currently on view at the Benaki Museum as part of the 2026 Athens Photo Festival. She is a recipient of the 2025 V&A Parasol Foundation Prize for Women in Photography and Baxter St.'s Mid-Career Artist Initiative, and was shortlisted for the PhMuseum Women Photographers Grant, the Witty Books Dummy Award, and the PhMuseum Photo Grant. Recent exhibitions include Spark of a Nail at Baxter St., New York (2025). She received her MFA in Photography from Yale School of Art in 2020, and is currently part-time faculty in the Photography Department at Parsons School of Design.
