November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to December 10, Human Rights Day, is recognised globally as the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence. ✊

This year’s theme, “UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls”, aligns with our research at TAMAH Consulting Services for a World-Bank commissioned study on Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) in Latin America and the Caribbean. 💻📱

We invite you to take action by completing and/or sharing our surveys for:
	•	Survivors and witnesses of TFGBV, and
	•	NGO and policy stakeholders working within the TFGBV referral pathway (women’s rights, LGBTQ+, and disability rights activists, human rights defenders, legal professionals, tech and cybersecurity specialists, government representatives, and others).

See the links in our bio to access the survey. 🔗

Across the region — especially in Dominica 🇩🇲 , Grenada 🇬🇩 , Jamaica 🇯🇲, Saint Lucia 🇱🇨 , St. Vincent & the Grenadines 🇻🇨 — reliable data on TFGBV remains limited. Your participation can help change this, strengthening regional legal frameworks and improving responsive services for women and girls. 🧡💜

As Hurricane Melissa 🌀 approaches Jamaica, I can’t help but think about our coral reefs. 🪸

Earlier this year, I attended a Climate Change Advocacy Workshop hosted by Jamaica Environment Trust (@jamentrust1991) where I worked with a group to create an infographic campaign about the importance of protecting our coral reefs, which in turn protect us.

Healthy coral reefs can dissipate up to 97% of wave energy 🌊, a natural defense that is especially important during storm surges. Unfortunately, our coral cover has been severely damaged and reduced by over 50% in some areas because of human activity. I wonder how much protection our remaining reefs can offer us now…

As the storm draws near, our first priority must be safety. But when the storm passes and rebuilding begins, I hope we focus on restoring the health of our reefs. With climate change intensifying the strength and frequency of storm events, this is more urgent than ever before.

I pray for the safety and resilience of Jamaica. I pray that we become better stewards of our environment. Our future depends on it. 💙🇯🇲 by @morghansfieldnotess

Carnival 2025 was a lovely lesson in the real magic of mas.

This year, I chose to play traditional mas, embodying Mami Wata as a Moko jumbie. I challenged myself both physically & creatively to bring this water spirit to life on the road for Carnival Sunday.

I’ve always loved the ocean. Living in Jamaica, I’m ever conscious of our complex relationship with water:
the waters that carried our ancestors here, the faith, resilience, & traditions that endured those crossings;
the abundant marine life and coral reefs beyond our shores doing their best to survive and shield us from storm surges despite increasing threats of warming waters, pollution, and destructive human activity.

With this in mind, I felt called to embody Mami Wata the powerful, protective, seductive, and sometimes dangerous, water spirit also known as Mother Water, the Mother of all Mermaids, Yemaya, La Siren, and River Mumma, as celebrated throughout much of Africa and the Caribbean. To honor her is to respect our oceans and protect our future. Play by Her rules or face the storm. Tell dem seh Mami Wata seh suh.

Every element of this costume was intentional.
I used recycled costume pieces as an ode to the need for sustainability, more conscious consumption, and protection of our planet.
I visited the beach to collect shells to incorporate into my hair, crown, bra, and belt.
I learned how to sew… and made sequins out of plastic bottles to mimic scales—a subtle commentary on the effects of plastic pollution in our waters.

This process taught me so much about myself as a creative. It reminded me that I can learn new things and bring bold visions to life. It reminded me to reconnect with my spirit, my community, and my environment. I’m so grateful for how everything came together. And of course, big up @walkingtallja for the confidence and community to stilt walk with. Special thanks to the handlers who kept us safe that day.

Playing mas will never be the same again. 💙🧜🏾‍♀️🏝️🌊🐠🐚🪸
