Gray • Coming soon

This is perhaps one of the strangest and most difficult fonts I’ve worked on over the years. It often took several years of experimentation and time away to land on some of the decisions that make it what it is today.

Is it a sans, a serif or a blackletter? How do you balance the sensibilities of these without Frankensteining them together? by @morning.type

I’ve realized that I’ve been working on Gray for 10 years now. 10 years!

Instead of letting it continue to collect dust on my computer, I am preparing an early release of it as an in-progress font.

An experiment in eagerness 🫣 Three f’s with differing lengths of the top terminal. The first one is the longest and labeled “f.eager” and the last is the shortest and labeled “f.shy”. The one on the middle is simply labeled “f” as it is the default and falls in between the two others in terms of terminal length/eagerness. by @morning.type

Posting right before I go to bed because I don’t have a social strategy 😛 well really my strategy is simply “make the things I want to see in this world.” And for me—for whatever reason—manifests itself as a glorified spreadsheet of type foundries filled with thousands of data points.

Any way, have you been to the new type foundry directory yet? 👀 by @morning.type

Last in the series of this Gill Kayo interpretation. In the last post I talked a bit about texture, and while it’s extremely subtle, another way I am playing with embracing unevenness is by making the right stem of the “n” thinner than the left. Sounds blasphemous, I know! by @morning.type

Another look at this Gill Kayo interpretation. Something I have found a particular interest in with this face is the texture. So often with heavy fonts, designers flatten any sense of texture in favor of an even blackness.

Kayo seemed to prioritize personality and embraced an uneven quality to let the texture shine rather than shying away from it.

I’ve been interested in finding ways to preserve that sparkly quality that you see in the “a” for example. The capital “G” is probably most indicative of this effort. by @morning.type

A quick weekend experiment to reinterpret Gill Kayo. Always inspired by the work of @okaytype and the recent display cuts of Solar from @abcdinamo. by @morning.type

Actual Grotesk • Ugly but usable? I am still of the opinion that it needs more je ne sais quoi (fucked-up-ness). by @morning.type
