For one week every September, I stop building websites and start drafting patterns.

I've been going to the Jane Austen Festival in Bath since 2012, and I sewed every outfit here myself, including a copy of a costume from The Other Bennet Sister (top right).

Turns out dressmaking and web design aren't so different:

👗 A toile is just a wireframe with pins.
👗 Drawstring bodices were responsive design 200 years early.
👗 Nobody notices the hundreds of neat stitches, only the one that's missing. Much like a broken link.

The rest of the year I build websites for charities and schools that work properly under the bonnet (sorry, had to). And unlike Mr Bennet, I have every 'compassion for your poor nerves' on launch day.

Most websites fall into one of two camps by their third birthday.

The ones that still load fast, still reflect the business, still work properly.

And the ones with a broken contact form, a copyright footer that says 2022, a staff photo that includes three people who no longer work there, one person nobody can identify, a plant that died, and a "coming soon" page for a service that never came.

Your website doesn't stay still when you're not looking. It quietly deteriorates. Like a houseplant you forgot about. Like milk left on the counter. Like that one drawer in your kitchen that somehow contains 47 rubber bands, a dead battery, and a menu from a restaurant that closed in 2019.

Nobody plans to have a haunted website. It just... happens. Slowly. Quietly. Until a potential client clicks your contact form and absolutely nothing happens, and they go to your competitor instead, and you never find out why.

The good news? It doesn't take much to fix. The bad news? It does require someone actually remembering to do it.

AI can spin up a website in minutes. Cool. 🎉

But ask yourself:

Will it break next month?
Can it grow with your business?
Can your team update it without having to bug a developer?

If the answer is “probably not,” then it’s not ready for real business.

Fast drafts are fun. Real websites that actually work and scale? That still takes a human touch. (Tip: I'm a human with experience! 😉)

AI helps speed things up. It doesn’t replace common sense...or experience.

I had a few messages after my last post about the Partner Plan, so I thought I’d explain it a bit better 👇

First, a quick life update: Wellington (my cat 🐾) and I survived a vet visit this morning — so we’re both still standing 😅

Now back to the Partner Plan…

It’s basically ongoing website support, without the usual faff.

Instead of starting from scratch every time you need something, you’ve got a set number of hours each month to use however you like.

Need updates? Send them over.
Something not working? I’ll sort it.
Want to improve things? We’ll work on it.

I’ve been a little quiet on here… 👀

A lot’s been going on behind the scenes — both in work and life. I moved house last year and am now based in Wales, which has been a nice change of pace.

Alongside that, I’ve been busy with client work and building something new.

I’m calling it the Partner Plan.

It’s for businesses that want a web team they can rely on — without the hassle of chasing or juggling different people.

Think ongoing support, updates, improvements, and having someone on hand when you need it.

I’ll share more soon, but it feels good to be back on here and posting again.

10 years ago, I walked into the Chamber of Commerce in Rotterdam to register my business.*

The early years were tough but fun, and while running a business is still hard work, it’s a different kind of hard now – with more confidence, skills, and (hopefully!) wisdom under my belt.

Life over the past decade has been eventful, including a move to England mid-pandemic and navigating personal loss. But one constant has been the joy of doing what I love.

Special thanks to Cindy Mattijssen – my best friend and an incredible collaborator. Working on projects with you has been such a highlight, and your humour and laughs have kept me sane along the way!

And, of course, thank you to my amazing clients – your trust and collaboration have made these 10 years possible.

Here’s to the next chapter of learning, growing, and doing what I love. 🎉
