To mark the 75th anniversary of the High Speed Club (HSC), I was able to activate the highest mountain in the canton of Basel-Stadt today. The mountain is visible from afar, thanks to its 250-meter-tall television tower—the tallest free-standing structure in Switzerland. In a short amount of time, I made contacts with stations from all over Europe. Zum 75. Today, I had the opportunity to visit the windmill at the „Lange Wand“ in Bad Nauheim. It is a former wind pump that conveys brine to the graduation towers extending along both sides. The 20-meter-high tower, with its now-restored sails, is one of the city’s most distinctive landmarks. After the visit, I also had the pleasure of doing a „first activation“ as part of the GMA—or „Mills on the Air“ (MOTA)—program. Zimmerberg (GMA HB9/ZH-1012)
On August 26, 2026, I was able to activate Zimmerberg using Morse code (CW). The mountain is known for the 9.4-kilometer-long railway base tunnel running beneath it. The view from the top is fantastic in all directions, offering vistas that extend deep into the Alps. The hike can be shortened by taking the PostBus; the walk from the Widenbach stop takes about 20 minutes. You can also complete a wonderful 3-hour circular hike. Saffa Insel
GMA HBI/ZH-004

Despite the rain, I felt like doing some short radio activity today on Saffa Island in the Lake Zurich. Shortwave propagation conditions weren’t good. Nevertheless, I managed to make contacts all over Europe. The highlight was the contact with ER/DL4MFM/P in Transnistria.

For visitors to the city of Zurich, this is a lovely walk from Bürkliplatz along Lake Zurich. The 2.5 km route can easily be covered in 30-40 minutes. It gets very crowded on weekends and holidays. The island covers approximately 3000 m² with a maximum length of 80 meters and a maximum width of 45 meters. It lies at an altitude of approximately 407 meters above sea level.

Saffa Island is an artificial island in Lake Zurich. It was created for the Swiss Exhibition for Women’s Work (SAFFA) in 1958. The island is listed in the city’s inventory of protected gardens and parks of municipal importance.

Today, Sunday 28.06.26, there was time for a short radio activation in Bremgarten. The Reuss power plant is still operational, houses a small museum, and bears the mill reference MOTA X38820. In the immediate vicinity are five World Castle Award (WCA) sites: the fortification bridge, the Hexenturm (Witches‘ Tower), the Spittelturm (Hospital Tower), the Herrmannsturm (Hermann Tower), and the Katzenturm (Cat Tower).

June 24, 2026, was a good day for a one-day hike in Toggenburg. The Tweralpspitz (SOTA HB/SG-060) and the Chrüzegg (GMA HB9/SG-1023) were activated on the radiobands and contacts were made with stations all over Europe. Thanks to the altitude of over 1200 meters, there was a pleasant breeze throughout. Down in the valley, it was a warm 35 degrees Celsius.
