Your future is grim UNLESS you make an exerted effort to change it.

The first step is to acknowledge that social media addition is widespread and normalized. This is not by accident, it’s by design.

The device you’re using is incredibly powerful, and it enables stronger dopamine hits from social media platforms to drive hooks deep into your brain.

I struggled for many years getting a hold of this addiction.

I would come to publish work, connect with collaborators, or keep up with friends. But here, all of these innocent things sit right next to endless content black holes from which not even light can escape.

Over the years, I’ve come up with many of strategies to avoid sinking hours a day into these apps while still reaping the benefits of them.

If you’re like I was and you feel you’re spending hours of your life here against your will, perhaps this is a journey you should take too.

You can reverse engineer many of the methods employed to get you here and keep you here. It’s quite effective. But for it to work, you have to decide why it’s important to you.

It starts with some brutal honesty about what you want out of life, what you need to do in order to achieve that, and how each minute spent social media or some other distraction is getting in the way of that.

Then the fight can start.

These platforms will suck you dry if you don’t do everything in your power resist their pull.

First and foremost, delete the apps.

This will save you hours by preventing unconscious pickups.

It takes 10 seconds to reinstall if you absolutely need to, but never make any justifications for keeping or staying on the apps. You will end up stuck in vertical video black holes. Always.

You are capable of incredible things, but not here. Nothing constructive ever happens here.

Let’s get free. Together we can save to world from this plague. One person at a time.

Time will move on with or without you.

Your one chance at life will be over before you know it.

It will pass whether you are paying attention or not.

Savor every moment.

Because you truly do not know how much time you have left.

All the beauty in the world is right around you.

You just have to look.

Cinema has the power to heal.

We cannot let the art form die at the hands of infinite garbage content blackholes and passive binge sessions.

Only consume the greatest. The most inspired. There are many 10/10 films out there, and you should watch those before you spend one more second doom scrolling or watch any Netflix garbage.

Then, you should create them. In the last decade, filmmaking has finally become truly accessible.

You can use the camera in your hand. Just grab a friend and shoot. There is no cap to how high you can elevate your craft.

Go make the films that will inspire the next generation.

Nothing can stop you.

This is a letter I wrote to my 8 month old son.

He is beautiful, and he will be a force in this world.

I don’t know what the future will look like, but we must first and always remember that the human spirit is indomitable.

It’s how we’ve made it this far.

However large the trial we face, we will unite to overcome.

Find your strength in the humans around you.

It has never been a more important time for empathy and optimism to flood our world.

We must nurture it in ourselves and everyone around us.

We will find higher ground. Together.

All super 8 footage in this film was sourced from a miraculous video on Youtube called “Grandpa super 8 footage”, published by The Jons’. It’s 3.5 hours of incredible footage that feels otherworldly. At the time of publishing this, it has 4.4k views. I highly recommend checking it out, it will lift your spirits.

There is a worm crawling around in your brain.

It feeds every second it gets a moment to influence your thoughts.

It pokes at your emotions and desires to puppeteer you.

It is invisible and its consequences are unmeasurable.

It gets stronger every day.

Good luck.

I am of course referring to the numerous Artificial Superintelligences backed by the wealthiest corporations in the world.

Being over-optimized to manipulate every last physiological human vulnerability.

It is the most powerful weapon mankind has ever created.

And it’s control over you is “voluntary”…

No. I wouldn’t say so.

Silent addiction is the bread and butter, and it’s rampant.

It’s effective because it does not appeal to our higher cognition and decision making, it appeals to us as primates.

If you do not want to be reduced to a primate, you have to make significant effort to ward it off.

Step 1:

Total awareness.

You need to know where your time goes.

And you need to ask yourself what YOU got out of it.

You need to justify every second.

Step 2:

Unpredictability.

Muscle memory is our greatest vulnerability.

Doing the exact same task, even just a second time, requires significantly less cognition.

By keeping the task different every time, muscle memory cannot form and your higher decision making is still at play.

I built a lockbox with unmarked locks and keys, but hiding your phone in different spots works just as well.

Step 3:

Do something with your freedom.

Perhaps something constructive for yourself or others.

If you do not make use of your freedom, you will end up right back here.
