POSTS STORIES REELS

Tihda Vongkoth is a percussionist and composer working with instruments that hold a lot of history.

Percussion has always been more than rhythm. Across cultures, it’s been used to communicate, to gather people, to mark ceremony, and to hold memory.

Instruments like the marimba come from African diasporic roots and have traveled across continents—shaped by migration, colonization, and community. They’ve been played in celebration, but also as a way to stay connected to culture when that connection was being disrupted or erased.

In this mini doc, Tihda reflects on what it means to create while holding that kind of history.

This is just a glimpse into their process.

If you missed the premiere, you can watch the full mini documentary through the link in our bio.

When you look at history, this isn’t just a nice quote—it’s real.

Music has always been how people survive and push back.

For Black communities, spirituals carried coded messages during slavery.

For Latin American communities, songs documented resistance and spoke out against dictatorship.

For Lao communities, music like lam and the sound of the khene held stories of home—especially during and after the Vietnam War, when so many people were displaced.

And instruments like the marimba carry their own histories too—rooted in African diasporic traditions and used across communities to preserve culture, memory, and connection.

Across all of this, music has been a way to remember, to resist, and to stay connected—especially when people are pushed to the margins.

That’s the lineage artists like @tihda.vongkoth are creating from today.

And that work doesn’t sustain itself. It needs support.

Can we count on you on April 15 & 16?

What would happen if we treated joy like an archive?

At the Black & Latinx Summit in Champaign, IL, our founder Yoleidy Rosario (@MosaicArtist) shared Polaroid Poetics — a space for archiving joy through poetry and photography.

The images we keep.
The memories we return to.
The small moments that remind us we were here, living.

Those reflections came together through various group poems like this one. In this clip, Zen the Rapper (@z.t.rapperlit) reads one of the collaborative poems created during the workshop.

Moments like this are part of the artist process — reflection, experimentation, and collective storytelling that help artists and communities create meaning together.

Mark your calendars: April 15–16 is the Giving Challenge. Every donation up to $100 will be doubled.

Your support helps us create and sustain spaces like this where artists and communities can come together through creativity and reflection.

What does it take for an artist to follow their intuition?

Morgan Bickel’s work moves between photography, waterlolor, pastels. Whatever the moment calls for. Their work is quiet. Intimate. The kind of images and paintings that feel like someone letting you in.

But that kind of freedom doesn’t happen on its own. It takes time. Space. Resources. Someone believing in you before there’s anything to show for it.

That’s what we’re building at Mosaic Movements. And during the Giving Challenge-April 15-16, Noon to Noon-donations up to $100 will be matched to help us support artists, youth arts programs, artist workshops, entrepreneurship development, scholarships, residencies, and creative opportunities in our community.

Join us by pledging to make a gift.

What does it actually take to make art?

For most artists, the answer is simpler than people think: time, space, and support. Especially before anyone’s clapping.
Today we’re excited to share the first artist story in our Giving Challenge series—featuring Morgan Bickel.

Morgan’s work explores the intersections of identity, disability, and artistic practice. They’re asking important questions about access, visibility, and who gets to call themselves an artist. Questions that matter to all of us at Mosaic Movements.

We actually premiered the full conversation yesterday on YouTube. If you want to hear more of Morgan’s story—the parts that didn’t make it into this short video—you can find the link in the comments.

Through this series, we’re pulling back the curtain on the creative process—the experimentation, the reflection, the persistence—that happens long before art reaches an audience. Because supporting artists means supporting all of that invisible labor, not just the finished piece.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be introducing more artists whose work and perspectives make our creative community what it is. I hope you’ll stick with us.

There’s an artist right now grinning next to what feels like a breakthrough.

You can’t see the three failed versions in the trash can just out of frame.

So much of the creative process happens in silence. Not silence like quiet. Silence like unseen. The rehearsal no one attends. The sketch no one approves. The draft no one claps for. The dancer running it one more time after everyone’s gone. The photographer walking the same block for the hundredth time, waiting for the light. The interdisciplinary artist trying to figure out which medium today will actually say what needs saying.

At Mosaic Movements, we’ve been talking a lot about that gap. The one between public celebration and private labor. Because if we only fund the “ta-da,” we miss the point. We miss the chance to make sure the conditions are right before the artist even gets to the starting line.

If we only show up for the final show, we’re showing up late.

So over the next few weeks, we’re going to sit in that “before” space with you. Pull back the curtain on what the messy middle actually looks like—across painting, dance, theater, film, and everything in between. We hope you’ll pull up a chair.

Here’s what we’re wondering: What’s something in your own life—creative or not—that no one sees, but makes everything else possible?

April 15-16 is the Giving Challenge. Every dollar helps us protect that space for artists who need it most. Not just the finish line—everything that comes before.

Sometimes the hardest part of being an artist isn’t making the work — it’s having the time, space, and resources to do it.

That’s why Mosaic Movements is participating in the Spring 2026 Giving Challenge on April 15–16 — a community-wide day of giving where donations are matched to support local nonprofits. During the challenge, every donation of up to $100 will be matched per donor, helping your support go even further.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing some of the artists, stories, and creative processes that your support helps make possible.

🗓️ Save the date and follow along as we get closer to the Giving Challenge.

Decolonization Rider — Artist Workshop (Virtual)

What does it mean to engage artists in ways that are accountable, safe, and justice-centered?

The Decolonization Rider offers a framework for cultural institutions to advance decolonization while protecting artists, their work, and collaborators. In this virtual workshop, rider author Emily Johnson (Yup’ik Nation) and analyst & strategist Leomary Rodriguez (Afro-Taína) share findings from their Decolonization Assessment — what’s shifting in the field, what challenges persist, and what practices are working. Participants will leave with practical tools for institutional change grounded in care, sovereignty, and relationship.

Emily Johnson (@emilyjohnsoncatalyst ) is a body-based artist, land and water protector, and organizer for justice and well-being whose work insists thrivance and radical re-worlding.
Leomary Rodriguez is a data analyst and storyteller who uses data to illuminate patterns and support decolonial frameworks rooted in accountability and collective liberation.

Presented in collaboration with The Ringling’s Art of Performance Series at the Historic Asolo Theater (@ringlinghat) as part of the Artist Workshop Series, with support from The Ringling Museum of Art, Connect for More, and the Arts & Cultural Alliance.
