Galerie | Aspen Residence, Colorado

It's a pleasure to see our Aspen Residence featured in @galeriemagazine.

Thank you to J-P Conte for the opportunity to design this extraordinary home and for the trust, curiosity, and commitment he brought to the project. One of my favorite memories was walking the site with J-P in the snow, talking about family, Aspen, and the way the house should feel. Those conversations helped shape a home that responds directly to its remarkable landscape.

Set on a secluded six-acre site overlooking the Elk Mountain Range, the house follows the natural contours of the land, framing the mountains and creek while creating a seamless relationship between architecture and landscape. Exposed timber roof structures, expansive glazing, and a restrained palette of wood, stone, and metal define the architectural experience.

Projects like this are always the result of collaboration. My thanks to my associate, Helene Lee, and the entire Stephen Moser Architects studio; Michael Boucher Landscape Architect; interior designer @lexizavad; the team at @brikor; and the many consultants and craftspeople whose talent and commitment brought the house to life.

Thank you to @galeriemag, Jacqueline Terrebonne, Vicky Lowry, and @douglasfriedman for sharing the project so beautifully.

Hycliff - 01

Situated on a steep, wooded site overlooking the Byram River, this home was originally built in the 1960s and later renovated in the early 1970s by second-generation Modernist architect Paul Rudolph. The expansion reimagined the primary bedroom suite, opening it up to stunning views of the river and surrounding woods, while preserving the innovative design of Rudolph’s original addition. An existing deck was transformed into a cantilevered bathroom, and the interior spaces were thoughtfully reconfigured. This project marked one of SMA’s earliest engagements with mid-century modern architecture. We highly recommend visiting Materialized Space: The Architecture of Paul Rudolph at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

New Leaf - 05

The interior redesign looked to give the dining and bar areas a lighter sensibility while respecting the existing timber and stone architecture. As part of the project SMA, together with graphic designer Andrew LeClair, put together a new branding package that highlighted the properties integration with nature.
