Evidence Supporting the Star of David’s Jewish and Hebrew Origins.

One of the earliest symbolic connections comes from the pomegranate, a sacred motif throughout the Hebrew Bible.
The High Priest’s robe was adorned with golden bells and pomegranates (Exodus 28:31–35), Solomon’s Temple pillars were decorated with them (I Kings 7; II Chronicles 3), and they appear again in accounts of sacred objects in II Kings 25.

The pomegranate, one of Israel’s Seven Species (Deuteronomy 8:8), symbolized fertility, covenant, and divine blessing.

The Twelve Spies carried pomegranates back from Canaan as proof of the land’s bounty (Numbers 13:23). Archaeological discoveries show pomegranates engraved in jewelry, mosaics, burial items, and coins from the Great Revolt.

Importantly, the blossom and calyx of the pomegranate naturally form a six-pointed outline, leading some scholars to argue that the Star of David emerged as an abstracted version of this sacred botanical image.

Outside Judaism, the Star of David appears in other traditions.
In Rastafarianism, it is worn alongside the Lion of Judah, symbolizing descent from David and Solomon and a connection to the Ethiopian royal line.

Some Ethiopian Orthodox Christians use it in churches and manuscripts for its Davidic and messianic associations.

In Islamic art and architecture, it is found as part of geometric patterns decorating mosques, palaces, and manuscripts across Spain, Turkey, North Africa, and Persia.

In mystical and folk traditions, however, the figure carried protective significance.

Known in Islamic sources as the Seal of Solomon (Najmat Dawud), it was associated with King Solomon (Sulaymān), who in Islamic belief was granted wisdom and authority over spirits.

Amulets, talismans, and manuscripts sometimes depicted the six-pointed star together with divine names to ward off harm, heal illness, or bring blessing.
While Jewish tradition linked the star to King David, Islamic tradition more often tied it to Solomon, though the symbol itself was visually the same.
