After the birth of her first child, the author Catherine Cho experienced an episode of postpartum psychosis that led to hospitalisation, a prolonged period of depression, shame and guilt, and questions about her ability to be a ‘good’ mother, not least those asked by herself. Cho recovered, as most women with postpartum psychosis do, gave birth to a second child, and now lives a full life of love and health built around the demands and beauty that make up the parental experience. But while travelling recently she couldn’t escape the trial of Lindsay Clancy, an American mother alleged to have murdered her three children during a mistreated postpartum psychotic episode. Cho escaped her nightmare; she argues that Clancy never will. “Can a mother who loves her children become so unwell she would do unthinkable things?” she writes in a remarkable piece in this week’s @obsmagazine. “Yes. I know this. And until we have the vocabulary or the openness to understand this, then we cannot prevent it from happening…. My experience was a darkness we were able to contain. And while I used to think it was something firmly in our past, I’ve understood that it is still in our lives, a shadow we live with, a contrast to the light we have in our life now.”
