Sometimes the biggest changes in life start with the smallest things.🌈

Looking back at these old photos, we can’t help but smile. At the time, we didn’t know where these little moments would lead.

It started with making a few toys for our daughter. A little wooden buggy. A few projects in the workshop. Simple things made with our own hands. 🧸

But somewhere along the way, we realised it wasn’t just about making things. It was about creating a home and a life that reflected what mattered to us - natural materials, thoughtful design, and things made to last. 💚

Those small beginnings eventually became Motide.

And even today, those same values are at the heart of everything we create.

Please tell me I’m not the only one! ☝️😅

There some design things that make my design brain go NOPE! 👎

But honestly, most of my biggest kitchen and home icks come down to one thing:
Does it actually work for real life?

As mum I want my home to look beautiful but it also needs to be PRACTICAL. A functional kitchen, clever storage, a home that can handle daily life, the hectic mornings, the mess.

And after years of designing kitchens and homes, I may have developed a few strong opinions … 😂

Installation Snippets - it’s all about the details, right?! 🫶

It’s been a while since we made a Birch plywood kitchen. And this one reminded us how lovely this material is. It’s soo nice to work with!

These are a few details of our current installation. Birch plywood, mixed with terracotta fronts and some black accents.

The benchtop will be installed next week.
So follow along for the reveal of the completed kitchen. There are so many details to share in this project.

Yes, I am using AI! It’s fun…sometimes it makes things easier.🤔

But as a As a Gen X human and small business owner I must say that it also makes me feel anxious at times!

Content can be created in no time- whether it’s for instagram or your website, your business in general….but only if you know how to use AI properly 😂
So I do my best to keep up. But it’s crazy how this new world explodes! I feel like I’m always behind. 💨

But I have decided to try less to be perfect on here, have more fun and be more ‘visible’ on Instagram. And I’ll try to write my posts in my perfectly imperfect English as much as I can 😉

So here you go….some snippets of the last few weeks that are stupidly human.

The red house with the yellow floor 💥

We’ve been looking forward to this installation. The colours are bold and beautiful 🤩
From red cladding to sunshine 🌞 yellow Marmoleum - this house is fun and beautiful.

And yes there are few more colours to come. So stay tuned for more.

A chemical reaction, not a stain. 🪵🖤

Ebonising is one of our favorite ways to shift the tone of timber. By applying an iron solution (made from steel wool and vinegar), we trigger a natural reaction with the wood’s own tannins. It permanently darkens the fibers from the inside out, keeping the unique grain completely visible.

To protect the timber and lock in that deep almost black tone for the long haul, we finished it with a coat of Danish oil followed by Osmo oil.

This timber used to be red. Then we got a bit chemistry doing its magic. 🪄👀

These red spotted gum beams were originally destined for a pergola- but plans changed, and suddenly we had a stack of beautiful but extremely heavy 💪timber with nowhere to go.

So to integrate this beautiful timber into the design, we were asked to turned them into a dining table.
We cut some proper mortise and tenon joints (the fun kind of woodworking), then ebonised the timber with vinegar and steel wool until it went from red to almost-black. No stain, just old-school chemistry doing its thing.

Honestly still can’t get over the colour change. ❤️🖤❤️🖤❤️🖤❤️🖤❤️🖤❤️🖤

From our workshop to your doorstep... ✨

Building a custom piece is the fun part. But ensuring a heavy, solid wood vanity survives a bumpy courier ride? That is a whole different workout. 😅

The tools might be down, but the job isn’t done until we know it’s 100% safe. We wedge, brace, and wrap every single corner so nothing can move a millimeter on the road. For this order, we also tucked a little handmade chopping board into the drawer as a surprise thank-you before the tape went on as it went all the way to Dunedin.

Update: This beauty has officially landed in its new home, completely safe, sound, and scratch-free. The wrestling match with the box was totally worth it. 💪😉

Hear us out: Plywood might just be the ultimate design superpower. 🦸‍♂️🪵 👇

We just sent this custom beauty off to its new home, and the clients are suuuper happy! 🥳

For this piece, we paired stunning solid Blackwood with high-quality Gaboon plywood, including carcass-grade plywood for the drawer bases.
We get asked a lot why we are so obsessed with plywood instead of standard options like MDF or chipboard.

Honestly? It just makes life better. Here is why it wins our hearts every time:

It’s basically unshakeable!
Because plywood is made of cross-laminated layers of real timber, it holds screws like a vice. No wobbly hinges or sagging shelves here, just pure structural integrity.

It loves a humid bathroom 😉
Bathrooms get steamy! While compressed dust alternatives tend to swell up like a sponge at the first sign of moisture, high-quality plywood handles the damp environment like a champ.

Lightweight but incredibly tough!
It’s way lighter than dense MDF (which our backs thank us for when installing!), but it can take a serious hit without chipping or blowing out.

It’s real timber all the way through.
You get the gorgeous, authentic grain of real wood, meaning if life happens and it gets a little scratch years down the line, it can actually be touched up and loved for decades.

The ‘easy-wipe’ factor:
We love using carcass-grade plywood for our drawer bases. It adds massive strength to the drawers, and it’s incredibly smooth, meaning toothpaste spills or makeup marks wipe away in two seconds flat.

Custom joinery should look amazing, but it should also survive everyday life beautifully. That’s why we choose plywood! 🌟
