🐴🤎 The biomechanics behind every turn — Horse & Rider in Motion

Have you ever wondered which muscles are working when a horse makes a sharp turn and the rider stays balanced in the saddle?

✨ It’s all about coordination, stability and movement!

🐎 The horse uses its neck muscles to guide the head and neck, its back and abdominal muscles to stabilise the body, and its hindquarters to generate power and control the turn.

🤠 The rider relies on the core and back muscles to maintain balance, the arms and forearms to regulate the reins, and the gluteal and leg muscles to stay stable and follow the horse’s movement.

🎥 In this video, we slow down the action to explore the movements and muscle groups involved in this dynamic partnership.

💡 Did you know? Good riding isn’t about holding the body rigid. It’s about maintaining stability while allowing the body to move in harmony with the horse.

❤️ The better we understand equine and human biomechanics, the better we can support performance, comfort and welfare — for both horse and rider.

Stronger understanding. Better movement. Happier partners. 🐴✨

In horses, the gluteus medius is a powerful muscle of the hindquarters. It plays a major role in hip extension and generates propulsion during walking, trotting, cantering and jumping. 💪

✨ Understanding how muscles work helps us better understand movement, training and body mechanics — in both horses and humans.

When in a resting position, the horse can fixate the kneecap or patella by extending the stifle and that is when the quadriceps tendon together with the medial ligament of the patella pull on the pattella. Which makes the medial ligament pull over the trochlear ridge of the femur.

Now the horse can rest without using their muscles actively! Interesting right!

While we as humans need our muscles to stand in an extension for a longer period. We cannot rest passively while standing on our feet

The reciprocal apparatus of the horse’s hind limb links the movement of the stifle (knee) and hock joints, allowing them to move in a coordinated and synchronized way.

It consists mainly of the m. peroneus tertius and m. flexor digitorum superficialis. Together, these structures create a mechanical connection between the joints:

When the knee flexes → the hock flexes.
When the knee extends → the hock extends.

This coordinated mechanism is essential for efficient hind-limb movement, stability, and normal locomotion.

🐴 Key message:
Knee ↔ Hock
Flex together → Extend together

Sterkere nekken. Meer balans. Samen beter bewegen.

📚 Gebaseerd op Goff (2022) – Managing the Rider.

English:
A stronger neck starts from within 🐴🤍

Did you know that the deep neck flexors play an important role in the balance, stability and movement of both horse and rider?

These small, deep muscles help stabilise the head and neck, support posture and contribute to better coordination.

✨ For the rider

A simple exercise in supine position: gently tuck your chin, lift your head a few centimetres off the ground and hold. Small movements, big impact!

✨ For the horse

The deep neck flexors are located lower in the neck, closer to the base of the cervical spine. With the right exercises and guidance, we can help improve neck stability, body awareness and movement quality.

Because a horse and rider are one moving system. 💫

Stronger necks. Better balance. Moving better together.

WHAT IS EEN BLESSURE? 🩹

🧩 Waar ontstaan compensaties?

WHAT IS AN INJURY? 🩹

A horse moving differently is not automatically an injured horse.
And a horse without an obvious injury can still have a problem with movement or function.

An injury involves tissue damage or a disturbance of normal physical function. But physiotherapy looks beyond the diagnosis.

🔎 How is the horse moving?
🧩 Where are compensations occurring?
⚖️ How is the horse coping with load?
🐴 And what factors are influencing the horse as a whole?

Not every limitation is an injury.
But every change in movement deserves attention. by @motioncare.ck

🐴✨ The masseter muscle – an important muscle that is often overlooked

The masseter, also known as the main chewing muscle, is one of the strongest muscles in the horse’s body. It plays an essential role in chewing and closing the jaw.

But its importance goes beyond chewing. Tension around the jaw can also influence the horse’s relaxation, balance and overall way of moving. A horse that holds tension in its jaw may find it harder to fully relax.

🤲 That’s why it can be beneficial to regularly check this area and gently release the masseter.

Using soft pressure and slow, calm movements can help the horse release tension and encourage relaxation around the jaw.

Always pay attention to your horse’s response and stay within their comfort zone. 💕
A relaxed jaw can be a beautiful first step towards relaxation throughout the body.

✨ Sometimes relaxation starts in a place you wouldn’t expect.

🐴 Paard vs. mens — wist jij dit? 🧠

Wist jij hoeveel wervels een paard heeft? 👇

🐴 Horse vs. human — did you know? 🧠

At first glance, our spines may look quite similar… but there are some fascinating differences! 👀

A great reminder that anatomy isn’t just about where things are, but also about how the body is built to move and function. ✨

Did you know how many vertebrae a horse has? 👇

🇳🇱 MENS vs PAARD 🧍‍♀️🐴

🇬🇧 HUMAN vs HORSE 🧍‍♀️🐴

Did you know that the human and horse back have some surprising similarities? 👀

In both humans and horses, the erector trunci consists of three important muscle groups: iliocostalis, longissimus and spinalis.

These muscles play an important role in posture, stability and movement.
But… the anatomy is, of course, not exactly the same! 🐴✨

Swipe ➡️ to discover the similarities and differences between the human and horse back.

Do you know these muscles? 👇
