Two choppers done in two weeks!
Because of work, my time is always limited so I have to make hay when I’m home. And really, putting a bike together doesn’t happen in a vacuum. I’m very lucky that my partner is cool with me disappearing to the garage for twelve hours at a time.
The long XLH1000 is a ‘72; the first year of the thousand CC engines. It came with an electric starter, but I took that off. It came with a horn, but I took that off. It came with turn signals, but I took them off. Now it’s in an OG Denvers frame with a wild homemade kind of narrow springer. The sissy bar is asymmetrical and made of C-channel so it weighs about 500lbs more than usual. The paint is Montana acrylic with 1Shot in the mix. Everything else has come together over the years, collecting goodies and hard to find stuff.
The XLCH is a ‘62, back when they were only 900 CCs and Sportsters were basically used for dirt bikes and racing. These poor engines got knocked around pretty badly. @johnrepetto basically had the outline done for this essay, I just filled in the details. The front end is a stock 33.4mm, like it would’ve had back in the sixties, the frame is the original, just hardtailed, and the rear wheel is the proper 18” like it would’ve had stock. Some of the other stuff like the Wassell fender and the bars are all aftermarket stuff I love.
The ‘72 is on its third build (maybe it’s last?) and the ‘62 hasn’t run in like, two years. So I’ve just been pulling off parts and losing nuts and bolts in the various sheds it’s been kept in. I’m just glad they both run (at the moment) and I can get on and rip. Whenever you have the time, you don’t have the money and whenever you have the money, you don’t have time.

Zines are ready! I’m home from work early! Couple of things: today is #internationalwomensrideday, I can’t think of a better day to plug my zine, featuring only badass, lady riders, than today. Maybe you’ve heard of the three features in Issue 00.7, maybe you haven’t! They chop, customize, shoot photos, race, publish zines, raise families, drink cheap beer, ride bikes and most importantly: raise hell. I’m so proud they contributed and without the support of everyone in this community, Motocompo Magazine wouldn’t be here. So thank you Savannah, Heather and Alexa. Hope to see you on the road.
.
I have 25 of the 50 copies left, and when they’re gone, they’re gone! One copy is $5. DM me for payment details if you want one. I hope you all enjoy! Cheers!

If you couldn’t already tell, Issue 00.7 is all about directly highlighting some amazing women in the moto community. They deserve to be featured with the rest of our contemporaries. Their stories alone are badass enough to keep us all rapt with interest. Please join me in supporting the ladies in our small world, like Savannah here! Her pearly, kitchen-built Sportster is as rad as they get!
