RONDOS - “Which Side Will You Be On? 7”

• Before having any songs or equipment or even a name for the band, Rondos had agreed to play a show. Talk about a trial by fire! I wonder how that gig sounded, haha. My guess, a mess. I remember reading a story about the Urinals starting in a very similar way. And Weird Al kinda… Having the guts to walk unknown from the dorms to the stage and just play loud in front people is fucking great. Luckily for us and all three of those acts that moxie worked out nicely. The Rondos would become one of the most influential DIY bands in the Netherlands. Urinals too to a lesser and Los Angeles-er degree. I have no idea whatever happened to Weird Al. I hope he is okay.
• My friends started a band in this manner when they were blindly invited to play a frat party. Bros thought it would be funny to invite some “freaks” into their home to make a racket and annoy the neighbors. Cock Snot & the Communist Cabaret (good name, right?) managed 35 minutes of the most wonderfully unrehearsed button pushing new wave cacophony before the once snickering drunken houseful quickly became violent. Bottles and fists were flying fast and thick along with uncreative homophobic slurs and lawsuit threats aplenty. By the time the melee was fully under way the aforementioned neighbors were out on their porch pointing and laughing at these dumb assholes and their backfired pettiness. We got outta there with only a few lumps but not before one of us managed to upper deck the joint. Thinking back on this now, one of the frat guys was the Governor’s kid. I am shocked the cops didn’t show up. Maybe they did but we were ghosts by then. Good times… I wonder if the Rondos or Urinals’ gigs ever ended like that.

THE NIXE - “The Nixe” 7”

• I love this band so much. The Nixe is one of those groups that started on paper, moved on to grafitti and then finally grabbed instruments and wrote some songs. Concept first, then execution. Artist style. Whatever that egghead idiom is about ‘best laid plans’ does not apply to the four Utrecht hand-made ladies who boldly put The Ex in X-Ray Spex and Kleenex. There are not many songs in the world better than “Boring City”. Also, I love that every cover for this EP is unique. I have considered getting a tattoo of the scissors on my cover. Never too late…
• If anyone out there has a scan of the lyric sheet I could pinch, or better yet a real insert you don’t need, I’d love you forever.

THE EX - “All Corpses Smell The Same”

• All corpses may smell the same but all punks do not. Can we even call The Ex a punk band? They have succeeded at so many different styles that it would almost be disrespectful to box them into one thing. More of a movement really. One constant is they’ve always had a radical/anarchist message regardless of whatever musical vehicle they choose to deliver it with. Speaking of vehicles, I’m not sure how many times I’ve listened to “Human Car” in my life but it’s a substantial number. What a song! This is The Ex at the most punk sounding moment in their long and ever evolving sonic universe. Even the other tracks on this debut EP are more in line with post-punk than any other pigeonhole. No gods, no masters. They do exactly what they want and I love them for it.

THE VOPO’S - “I’m So Glad The King Is Dead” 7”

• “Hailing from Zwolle, widely recognized as the most boring city in Holland, The Vopo’s became quite popular in the scene. They released 2 albums, which is more than most Dutch punk bands can account for. But more importantly, their original drummer, Arnoud van der Eijk, left the band after their first (this) single to pursue a career in professional football.” -Jeroen Vedder
• The Vopo’s released the excellent ‘Dead Entertainment’ LP a year after this and by 1983 had gone full heavy metal. I like the metal stuff too but this EP is still my favorite. Jeff Bale at MRR said: “Classical punk from Holland. The vocals are nice and rough, but the guitar is too clean to scrape the wax out of your ears. Not as good as their well-rounded Dead Entertainment LP.” (MRR No.2)
• I appreciate whoever owned this copy before me and their freedom of thought bubbles. I do not appreciate the number 19. Maybe I’ll find a nicer copy someday… maybe not. I kinda like the scars. Real rocker shit.

COITUS INT. - “Dead Excitement” 7”

• An urgent and inspired debut by a group of young non-muscians blasted out quickly before the band promptly turned their attentions to more Joy Division adjacent explorations. Story goes that too many other punk bands popped up in the Utrecht area around that time so they decided on an early career direction change to have a chance to stand out from the crowd. Did it work? Don’t know, never listened to the later recordings. Either way, this is a great record and I love it. So wait, does that make punk the coitus and post-punk the interruptus? Sure let’s go with that.
• Speaking of punk and interruptus, on a mostly ill-fated post high school Europe trip I took in the 90s I found myself at a squat(?) punk venue called ACU to see some music. I forget who played but it wasn’t something that stuck with me. Cool place. Seemed like it had been there a good long time. Hit it off with some nice locals and they offered to let me crash in their apartment so I didn’t have to pay for a hostel. Score. We get back to the spot, my host casually waves at a “sleeping place”, a fridge, and a bathroom vicinity. I admit I wasn’t paying full attention, too busy having fun. People head to bed, I stay up for a bit having a quiet moment to myself, I need a toilet. Headed to the zone and cranked a knob. What I saw was an unmet roommate or two very confidently pleasing each other. Whoops. I apologized and promptly saw myself out to the correct door. They continued at ease, unashamed, and unbothered by my misstep. Was I embarrassed? Sure. Was there a freshly washed dildo on the sink? You bet. America is less progressive in the ways of the bedroom and this accidental walk in showed me the best example of sex positivity I’ll probably ever see in the wild.

SHITH - “Tonight She’s By My Side”

• The first few seconds of ’Tonight She’s By My Side’ sound like they could be an outtake from the Thought Criminals LP. A record I love more than most…I got the madness for that flying saucer. Anyway, after that initial salvo Shith takes on more of its own life with some Ramones flavored 60’s influence creeping in. I am such a sucker for the cheap organ/cardboard box drums/sandpaper guitar sound. Speaking of sounds, there is no bass guitar on this recording, I love that. I love The Doors too. One of my favorite things in the world is when people, instead of conforming to the expected methods of whatever, just roll with what they have on hand and succeed in creating something original and cool.
• Just for my own shits and giggles I staged a recreation of the little cartoon under the band photo on the cover and turned it into an insert for my copy of the record. I like to have fun.

• Back in the early 90s, there was a racist boy that used to come to shows and try to recruit people for his Church of the Creator nonsense. One day when he approached me after my band played a basement set. I made a point of spotlighting him at the show and made him look so sheepish. He found me later that night and said I should be careful who I talk shit about on stage. So I punched his stupid racist face a bunch of times whilst whispering sweet reminders in his ear that it is he that should be careful. He didn’t come around much after that. He did, however, severely beat a gay man in the woods. Got in big ol’ trouble for that one.
• I saw him some years later after he’d gotten out of prison, someone inside stabbed his eye out. And he got real fat too. Never learned his lesson though. He was passing out pamphlets for Creativity which at first I thought was an arts thing - benefit of the doubt, art therapy is helpful right, prison changes people, trauma changes people? - but found out it was just the new terminology for the Church of the Creator thing. So I beat him up again. No one seemed to mind. What a disappointing human.
• You know what is not disappointing at all is this BVD EP. “Duty” is one of those big thick guitar things like Leather Nun or Liket Lever with a singalongable chorus hook. You can bathe in its sweaty toughness and still walk away humming a tune. What a ripper.

• I have a friend who was an amp builder. Spent a bunch of his time in school and apprenticeships getting real fucking good at the craft. Built some real beauties too. They type of thing that gets passed down from parent to child. He was also an avid motorcyclist. Getting back and forth with joy and ease. Then a lady who was driving and texting hit him full force and fucked his body up beyond recognition. He was in the hospital for months. He had to get like 30 surgeries. Can’t even hold a pencil any more much less a soldering iron. Gets migraines when he listens to guitar music. Hasn’t been to a show in ages. She works for the Navy and was on the clock when this happened. So she had unlimited lawyers on the government’s dime. He is a rocker who worked in the arts. Not really a fair fight. I’m sure you can guess who won in court. The wild thing to me is that was able to forgive it all and move on to the next phase. No hate in his heart. That is astounding. He is still alive and still a hilarious and generous dude who effortlessly improves my life just by being in it. I wish I could see the world the way he does.
• What he doesn’t (and won’t ever) know is that me and a couple other people still know where she parks her car. It’s crazy how much unexplained debris ends up in her windshield now… vroom vroom
• Be careful on the roads if you’re gonna ride. There are so many people that won’t see you.

THE SPOILERS / MORT SUBITE - “Split” 7”

• Like most people I know, I found my way to this record through hearing “Ich Liebe Ulrike” on the Killed By Epitaph compilation that Tim Yo booted. I was bowled over by that song and hoped that the rest of the Mort Subite stuff was as exciting. And it is. I love the recording and the saxophone playing on here is stellar. When I got this I finally got to hear The Spoilers too. Limburg’s first punk band. What a treat. I don’t understand what they were thinking starting their side off with a two and a half minute instrumental but it was the 70s so maybe their judgement was impaired… The other two songs are great though. Sadly, this excellent split EP seems to be the only output from either group. I would love to hear more. Especially from Mort Subite. At least this thing clocks in at 17 minutes. More gang for your guilder.

SUBWAY - “Jesus Loves Me” 7”

• Subway from Groningen had two lives as a band: the first as a slightly flower power infused pub rock band from ’69-’72 doing Doors, Velvet Underground and MC5 covers complete with a light show and backup dancers, and the second as a more streamlined punk outfit inspired by the “Groninger Springtij” from ’76-’82. What is offered here is the from the latter period bit but I can only imagine what it was like to see these geezers, for their first show mind you, open up for Fleetwood fucking Mac at the Rovers Return festival in ’69. Ha. I think they made the right move by breaking up and coming back a few years later as a cooler band. Or maybe they were just trying to cash in on the new tide of post-Pistols tunage? Who cares. We get this final No Fun release out of it and that is what matters.

MECANO LTD. - “Face Cover Face” 7”

• I picked up a copy of the deliberate “Killed By Epitaph” 2xLP middle finger to the titular imprint back when it came out (thanks Tim Yo!). I didn’t know much about Dutch punk beyond BGK, Lärm/Seein’ Red and maybe Filth so I was excited to dig in. I ravenously immersed myself in this stuff and quickly picked out my favorites and sort of moved on as one does with compilations, especially at the rate these types of comps were flooding the market back then. Fast forward a few years and I found myself traveling in Germany digging through a mishmash of flohmarkt stuff this odd fella was selling. A dubious charmer from the country in town hawking wares for milchmarks no doubt. Said he had more “political” (red flag! - like the kind with a backwards buddhist symbol in the middle) records in his boot across the lot… A little shaken, I politely declined and hurried my search along to get outta there ASAP. In my haste, I came across this Mecano Ltd. 7”. The name rung a bell but I couldn’t remember why so I spent the 10dm and brought this home. So glad I did that. The A-side is pure magic in the form of a punchy tuneful punker with almost Dadaist lyrics that, to this day, still don’t make much sense to me. When I flipped it over and “Fools” started up, my memory was triggered and the name came back in to the light of my dusty ass brain. Some mid-comp deep cut that disappeared in my initial KBEpitaph listening frenzy. Listening to it fresh on the EP, it jumped out a lot more as solid jam and cemented Mecano Ltd. as a permanent member of my collection. Great fucking record. But why in the fuck did they put “Fools” on the comp when “Face Cover Face” was right there!? More like hand cover face, Epitaph, no wonder you got killed…

GOD’S HEART ATTACK - “Treat Me Like A Doll” 7”

• No Fun Number One was my nickname in high school. Okay okay it wasn’t but that would be a good one for some Charlie Brown around town. GOD’S HEART ATTACK on the other hand, seemed like a lot of fun but sadly only left these two songs for us to pogo out the mere months they were a band. Damn near wore out my knees on this one. They were one of those bands that had a heady mix of strong personalities so they definitely burned bright and died quick. And after they split, half (twee) of them went on to be in The Helmettes. Onward and upward.
