Meet Dexter one of the Little Victors from our 2026 calendar. “Dexter was diagnosed in the summer of 2025 with limb girdle muscular dystrophy. Unbeknownst to us, it’s a genetic condition that he has had since birth. It wasn’t until we discovered him struggling to keep up with his teammates and finding physical activities increasingly difficult that we realized there was an issue. We were referred to both Genetics and the Neuromuscular Clinic at Mott, where through genetic testing, he received his official diagnosis, along with his older brother. Dr. Neil has spent hours with us, ensuring that Dexter receives the proper treatment from an array of medical specialists and explaining to us what to expect for his future. We will forever be grateful for her care as we navigate this new diagnosis.” Hail, Dexter!

🎗️Every week, the seventh floor of Mott Children's Hospital fills with applause as patients perform card tricks, show off drawings, dance and play guitar.

Many people join in on the fun, including staff members who participate alongside patients, families who cheer from the audience and sometimes people stand outside the door to watch.

NICU Awareness Month: Meet Ari💛💙

Born at 31 weeks and weighing just 3 lbs., 11 oz., Ari spent 60 days in the Brandon Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Mott.

Since birth, he has needed supplemental oxygen due to respiratory distress and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. At six weeks old, he was diagnosed with Trisomy 21 and has undergone five surgeries throughout his life.

Through every challenge, his family says, Ari shows incredible strength.

“He is the strongest Little Victor with the most contagious smile,” his mom, Amber, says. “He lights up every room he enters, spreading joy everywhere he goes!” by @mottchildren

Wyatt Tucker was always aware of how important safety goggles are when using Nerf guns. During a play date, he went to his room to put them on, when his friend accidentally shot him in his right eye.

He was diagnosed and treated at U-M for bleeding, retinal dialysis, and retinal detachment.

Now recovered, Wyatt and his family continue to spread their message of awareness to other families who might not realize how dangerous Nerf guns are if proper precautions aren't taken.

🎗️For nearly 20 years, Vanessa Shamany-Fakhoury has cared for patients at Mott. In October 2019, she found herself on the other side of the hospital bed when her 18-month-old daughter, Maria, became a patient.

Maria was diagnosed with anaplastic sarcoma of the kidney, an exceptionally rare cancer.

With the help of her care team, led by Drs. Sedig and Newman, her family and friends, 8-year-old Maria is now thriving.

💛🎗️Meet Sophia one of the Little Victors from our 2026 calendar. “At her one-year well visit, Sophia’s unusually pale complexion prompted her pediatrician to order bloodwork. Just hours later, a phone call delivered news that would forever change our lives — the results were consistent with leukemia. A bone marrow biopsy confirmed the diagnosis, and the very next day, a port was placed, and treatment began. Sophia spent the first 40 days in the hospital, with additional admissions lasting weeks at a time for chemotherapy and WBC recovery. Despite the challenges, Sophia’s spirit has remained unbroken. She is often seen performing at the weekly Talent Show or cruising the halls of 7 East on her favorite ride-on cars with Dashiel the Therapy Dog. Through every obstacle, she continues to embody strength, courage, and joy — our true warrior, our Little Victor. The entire Mott care team has been nothing short of extraordinary throughout our journey. We are deeply grateful for the compassion, patience, dedication, and expertise shown to Sophia every step of the way.” Hail, Sophia!
