What happens at Mountainside Studio?

On any given week I might be tracking a full band, mixing or mastering a record, recording an audiobook, hosting a live broadcast session, or working on voiceover for commercial and media projects.

That variety is one of the things I enjoy most about running the studio.

Mountainside is built around three main areas of work: music recording, production, mixing & mastering; live broadcast and in-studio sessions; and audiobook & voiceover production.

Different projects require different workflows, but the goal is always the same: create a comfortable, professional environment where people can focus on the performance and leave with great audio.

Now booking projects in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Know an artist, author, producer or media team who could use a space like this? Send this their way - or DM me to talk about a project.

🎶 Featured Artist Spotlight: Rita Dove | Poetry

Bridgetower Project is honored to collaborate with Pulitzer Prize winner and former U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove. Her acclaimed poetry collection Sonata Mulattica has been instrumental in bringing renewed attention to the life and legacy of George Bridgetower, and was the inspiration behind our project.

On the album, Rita reads four of her poems from the collection, bringing historical context and a powerful literary dimension to the music.

Rita is one of the most celebrated and remarkable literary voices of our time. I hope her readings on the album will inspire you to explore more of her work.

Thank you, Rita, for being part of this collaboration!

Mountainside Studio didn’t start with this building. Over 20 years ago, it started in a rental cabin a few miles up the road - on a street called Mountainside.
That DIY recording space, along with years spent working in larger studios and building other spaces of my own, eventually led to what Mountainside is today.

When it came time to build this studio, I wanted to make the best recording environment I could with the resources available to me. The result was a purpose-built studio designed around the way I actually like to work: serious acoustics and professional recording capability, but still comfortable, creative, and connected to the woods around it. This is a little of the story behind how it came together.

Know an artist or producer looking for a recording space near Charlottesville? Feel free to send this their way.

Magic Behind the Board! 🎶

Bridgetower Project is incredibly grateful to the extraordinary engineers who helped bring this ambitious, multistate collaboration to life. None of this would have been possible without their expertise, dedication, patience, and incredible attention to detail.

🎙️ Brad Michel, four-time GRAMMY® Award winner, recorded Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 9 “Bridgetower,” at the beautiful @shalinliuperformancecenter in Rockport, MA.

On a personal note, Brad has been involved in every single one of my recordings. He has been there through my good days and bad days at the studio, and by now, he has truly seen it all! I’m so grateful for his support, guidance, and honest opinions over the years.

🎙️ Ryan Streber of @oktavenaudio in Mount Vernon, NY, recorded Florence Price’s “Adoration,” recently featured as @gramophonemagazine’s Video of the Day, as well as the world-premiere recording of @paquitodrivera’s “Bridgetower Reimagined.”

🎙️ James McLaughlin of @mountainside_studio in Charlottesville, VA, recorded Pulitzer Prize-winning former U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove reading selections from her acclaimed “Sonata Mulattica,” bringing her extraordinary poetry into the heart of this project.

So much happens behind the scenes, and these remarkable individuals deserve to be celebrated just as much as the artists in front of the microphones.

Thank you, Brad, Ryan, and James, for your incredible work and for being such an important part of Bridgetower Project!

Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started playing drums at 10, and in the late ’90s an internship at Stanley House recording studio in London showed me something that completely changed the direction of my life: watching a song move from an idea in a room all the way to a finished recording, the radio, and the stage.
That fascination never really went away.
After years of recording in professional studios, DIY spaces, and just about everything in between, I eventually built Mountainside Studio here in Virginia. And despite having a pretty sophisticated room now, I’ve tried hard to keep the same DIY ethic that got me here — stay curious, solve problems, and do whatever helps the music.
Thanks for following along.

"We Don't Talk Anymore", a #newsong written by Keel and @timobrienmusic will be released on 10/27. The song was recorded at @mountainside_studio and features Tim on fiddle and vocals. It's about a couple who grow apart but who also long for a return to the feeling of closeness.
“It was the dream of a lifetime to sit down and write with Tim. I consider him to be one of the most unique, genuine and enduring icons in American songwriting," says Larry.
