The last km of the Base of the Torres hike is one of the most sketchy stretches of the W-circuit mainly because of the huge boulders on the trail. We started the hike before dawn to be at the base by sunrise, lack of light made it even more difficult…but in the end the morning light was perfect and this view made us forget all the toil it took…😄

Witnessing Fuego erupt at a distance in the middle of the night has been one of the most jaw-dropping experiences of our lives so far. Since we were not doing the Acatenango hike this time, I researched locations from where we could catch a glimpse of the volcano and Finca San Cayetano appeared as a top recommendation. We reached the location early in the afternoon to set up for the night. However, we were fairly disappointed with the weather- overcast conditions with very low visibility. The peaks of Fuego and Acatenango were not visible, all we could see was the lush greenery at the foothills. As the blue hour set in, more clouds started gathering. Under the light of our cabin porch, we could actually see low clouds coming into our cabin- reminded me of a very similar experience I had during my childhood on a visit to Cherrapunji, Meghalaya, India, which is known as one of the wettest places on the planet. Meanwhile, the resort staff did provide assurances that there were still chances of the clouds clearing up during the night/early morning and we could catch the eruptions, which made me a little hopeful. As we were putting our son to sleep in the cabin, miraculously, I could hear the wind picking up outside. In a matter of minutes, we could see Fuego and Acatenango emerge from the top of the clouds as two humongous giants, once again establishing my belief that the weather in the mountains can change in a blink of an eye and you have to be patient and see it through 😉. And thus began the incredible show of Fuego erupting late into the night sky. Being an active volcano, there is a guaranteed eruption every 10-15 mins and this was one of the biggest eruptions that I could capture that night. Moments like this made our trip to Guatemala extra special and this is something we would be cherishing for the rest of our lives 😊…

Not quite the sunrise I had envisioned at the Tetons. Overnight rain and a forecast into the morning made things worse.

But I’m glad I still made the effort to get out with my camera. The moody skies, rain-soaked landscape, and shifting light set the stage for all the drama at Mormon Row.
