Seattle Perimeter: Part One // May 4, 2025

Sometimes you sort of float through your life and you look for a bridge to cross that you hope will bring you a sense of worth, a sense of validation, or a sense of accomplishment. In May of 2025 I was in Seattle, having just recently left New York. I didn’t feel like I had much to my name. I was back home. Running was just about the only thing I could depend on and I was two months removed from PR’ing in the LA Marathon and still in marathon shape. A post-covid pastime is looking up maps and seeing what new terrain there is to cross and new routes that offer new possibilities. I don’t know how the idea of running around the city of Seattle came to me, but when it did I had trouble getting it out of my head. I knew I couldn’t do it in one go because I had never run anything over a marathon before. The initial estimates after looking at bike routes were in the 80 mile ballpark, but after looking at the maps, it felt like it was skipping some areas that could be passed through on foot. Though I knew there might be a few potential forks in the road (areas that I couldn’t legally enter like Harbor Island) I was looking at about 100-106 miles, which was the equivalent to a little over four marathons. The prospect of the challenge excited me. There would be so much ground to cover and so many new places to see. I had tried to do a couple of the perimeters before, but not like this. Not painstakingly exact in the route. The first leg was a gorgeous day and I couldn’t have asked for a better beginning to one of the coolest projects of my life. Around South Lake Union. Along the Burke Gilman Trail all the way to Golden Gardens. Through Blue Ridge, Carkeek, and Llandover Woods. Across 145th. And the Burke Gilman all the way to Magnuson. We move!

Seattle Perimeter: Part One (Extras)

One of the coolest things about the first part of the perimeter runs was having the opportunity to see some wildlife. On the way to Golden Gardens I saw a bald eagle hovering above and yes, sure, bald eagles aren’t the most uncommon bird in the world, but it was still cool to see nonetheless. A little later I took a video of some little duckies zipping around the water. It was a gorgeous day to move through Carkeek Park and one of my personal favorite locations, Llandover Woods, in the Northwest corner of the city. taken in Seattle, Washington by @mountaintoprc

Seattle Perimeter: Part Two // May 11, 2025

The second leg of the Seattle Perimeter was shaping up to be quite an awesome route, starting in Magnuson Park and ending a little south of Seward Park. It’s strange—I had been familiar with both of them, but hadn’t spent a ton of time at either growing up. It was a beautiful sunny day outside and I rode the good vibrations for the first five miles or so before the gray started to cover the sky above. I’m convinced that Windemere—one of the nicest neighborhoods I’ve ever been through, was also one of the quietest. I worried that clomp clomp of my shoes was going to cause a disturbance. The stretch through Union Bay and behind the UW playfields was great and then I got the Montlake Cut. The spirit of the “Boys on the Boat” had me smiling from ear to ear before looping around to the other side of the cut, where I would face my first real obstacle of the day, Foster Island. Unfortunately, it was submerged in water and I wasn’t able to cross, despite several attempts. The next bump in the road would come around Broadmoor Golf Club, which parallels the Arboretum. My running site that I used to map everything out didn’t account for the fact that that’s a private club, so when the woman asked me “What do you think you’re doing?”, I said, “I’m running.” After a back and forth, which led to her threatening to call someone, I figured it would be best to keep running and I did, but in the process got sort of trapped within the golf course. A particularly jagged fence ended up cutting deep into my hand and left a nasty mark and a lot of blood. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to record videos for the last half of the run, but running along Lake Washington Boulevard is always a reason to be thankful. At this point it was pretty overcast, but still a great day to get out there. After rounding Seward Park, I ended just a little bit south at Martha Washington Park. My giddy Dad was there to welcome me. To finish it off—an absolutely necessary dip in the water to calm me down. Another marathon in the books!

Seattle Perimeter: Part Two (Extras)

Before 2025 I didn’t even know you could run along the Montlake Cut and I had only run alongside the back part of the University of Washington once, if at all. Beyond being able to complete the project, I must have discovered hundreds of new segments to add to the arsenal. Seattle is full of beautiful places to run wherever you look! taken in Seattle, Washington by @mountaintoprc

Seattle Perimeter: Part Two (Extras)

Sometimes you create a marathon route and not everything goes according to plan. In the perimeter’s truest form there is a section around the Montlake cut called Foster Island that is supposed to connect you to the arboretum. I had never tried to make that connection before and I learned the hard way that it’s not the most accessible. In May, Seattle’s green spaces, especially the ones right along the water, always have the potential to transform into marshes and swamps and Foster Island was submerged in water. I did my best to tip-toe around what I could and get as far as the terrain permitted, but I didn’t bring my swimming trunks or flippers, so had to turn back and go the other way in order to connect to the Arboretum, adding a couple of miles to the grand total. It did make me want to attempt it at another juncture, but couldn’t get it done this time around. taken in Seattle, Washington by @mountaintoprc
