Hey! šŸ‘‹šŸ» I'm Alyssa, also known as Lyss.

I am a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy with an exercise Science background and a certified indoor cycling instructor.

My clinical focus and background is primarily in Outpatient Orthopedics with a passion for manual therapy to include dry needling, cupping and IASTM. I am well versed in a wide array of pathologies with a passion in orthopedics injuries (obvi), EDS, and vestibular dysfunctions to name a few.

My overall goal is to give you evidenced based information and opinion on how to move well, decrease injury and improve overall function to reach/obtain your goals.

I have always had a love for fitness, health, and wellness. I felt like it was time to share it all with you!

When i'm not working, you can find me outdoors (skiing, cycling, paddle boarding), drinking all of the coffee, finding new GF goodies, traveling & spending time with friends and family. 😊

Benefits of Dry needling:
•relieves pain
•relieves muscle tension
•improves range of motion and flexibility
•speeds up recovery
•address neuromuscular dysfunction
•compliments other treatments

Promotes blood flow and oxygen to to the targeted area, helping tissue heal more efficiently. Temporarily increasing inflammation.

Commonly asked questions:
•Is it the same as acupuncture? No. Same needles, different technique and methodology behind.
•Does it hurt? Sometimes. Depends on the area honestly and how aggressive the practitioner is with the needles
•what to expect after? Symptoms vary but general soreness lasting less than 24 hours.

Why I strength train and why you should too!Ā

Muscle mass decreases approximately 3–8% per decade after the age of 30 and this rate of decline is even higher after the age of 60.Ā

I was listening to a recent podcast via Peter Attia that came to an educated guess thatĀ  5%-10% of Americans are resistance training (that is very low).

Lifting and strength training is not a ā€œnew fadā€. People are finally realizing the importance of it. We are training for life and to live optimally. I am all about function. I am personally exercising to feel good and to keep my body strong to do my job and take care of my little one without getting injured. It is not always about aesthetics and body composition (although that is a bonus).

I primarily work with the geriatric population in my full time job and I see it day in and day out thatĀ Individuals who have exercised their whole life are in much better shape in their 80-90s than those who have not. Granted there are a lot of diagnoses and the power of genetics that we can’t control but if we focus on what we can now...the research supports improved longevity with strength training and decreased sarcopenia and bone loss in the future.Ā

It is never too late to start. We are in it for the long haul. Purely from an exercise perspective itself, there really is nothing that trumps exercise in regards to a reducing risk of chronic disease and longevity aspect.Ā

Ever wondered why people have those suction cup marks all over their backs or shoulders? It is from cupping! It helps people move and feel better!
Research supports cupping for pain relief. I find it very useful in conjunction with other manual techniques followed by mobility and strengthening! This may be for you if you have neck pain, upper back stiffness, work from home or at a computer, have a long commute or breastfeeding (or just feeling stressed after the holidays). Let’s also note the impact of thoracic mobility on neck ROM!

Solid total body home workout with an emphasis on core that should feel good on your joints (pregnant or not).

Still working on becoming more tech savvy to get my videos upright 🤣

1. Banded clamshell with elevation
 * Ensure to keep spine neutral and hips flexed around 45 degrees
 * Can regress without the ban
2. Bear holds
 * I am loving these over tall planks lately (esp if reg plans increase low back pain) and they are still challenging
 * Take or leave the band
3. Lunge with bicep curl
 * Focus on slow control stepping backwards with explosive lunge upward with glute of front leg
4. Reverse fly
 * Hinge at your hips, neck and spine neutral
 * Keep slight bend in elbows
5. Banded bridge with chest press
 * Can modify to bridge, lower then chest press for improved control and decreased core stability
6. Narrow press to pullover
 * Pro tip: do not let your back arch when coming overhead
That was fun. Hope you enjoy šŸ™‚
Keep following for more strength tips and workouts!!
