The pool of the Alcazar Hotel was one of the world’s largest indoor swimming pools. The Alcazar Hotel was built by Henry Flagler in 1889. The hotel played a significant role in developing tourism and establishing Florida as a tourist destination during the turn of the century. Once the swimming pool was drained, it became an indoor garden until the hotel closed in 1932. Nowadays, it is the coffee shop for the Lightner Museum. by @moving.immovable

From 1581, these hydraulic works provided a clean supply of Thames water for the City of London. The decision to build a new London Bridge meant the end of the venture, as water could no longer flow through the waterwheels at the same rate, and the City Corporation did not allow additional waterwheels. by @moving.immovable

Swimmobile was an initiative driven by August Heckscher, the head of parks and entertainment for the municipality of New York. In the summer of 1967, it was proposed that a truck with a swimming pool would move through the neighborhoods of Rochester to provide children without access to public pools the privilege of bathing in cold water as a measure to alleviate excessive heat.

The pools not only became a success but also a focal point for community gatherings.

These Swimmobiles lasted until 1990 and began to be replaced by water parks and play areas. With this, we understand that the pool, once considered immovable, transformed into its opposite; it became a moving public space, itinerant water. by @moving.immovable

PETRIKIRCHE POOL

Petrikirche was the First Lutheran church en st Petersburg and was built in 1728. The church was completely decorated with a baroque altar, sculptures and wall paintings and it was a church until the 20th century.

During the October revolution in russia all pastors were arrested and shot, and the church ended closing in 1937 and used as a warehouse and house for soldiers.

Years after the church architecture and implements were stolen and in the Soviet Union it was decided to change the use and display a pool in the same place.

The quote of the momento was: “Religion is opium for the people,” “Sport is life”

The pool basin was built right inside the church, in the main hall. It opened in 1963 and closet in 1993 when they returned it to the lutheran community.

The most amazing fact of this history is that they rebuilt the lutheran church first using the empty pool as a sacred space and then closing the pool hole with a platform. by @moving.immovable

Sri Lanka Civil War swimming pool

During the Sri Lanka Civil War, a massive swimming pool was constructed to train divers of the LTTE Sea Tigers for launching deep-sea suicide attacks against the Sri Lankan navy. The swimming pool was concealed in the middle of the jungle, its ceiling covered with plants to avoid detection by planes. The pool was built in 2001, measuring 25 meters in length and 7 meters in depth. It also included an underground space connected to the bottom of the pool, allowing a person to observe diving activities. This pool still exists and is visited by tourists. by @moving.immovable
