a routine time with April; talking about family, spirituality, and exploration - today we threw in a casual dance break (and a fast, casual edit)

this is an example of pure dance improvisation: we are gliding around each others auras and picking up on unspoken cues. personally, i am trying to move in atypical ways… here, I love watching April’s manifestation of slick gestures. taken in San Diego, California by @movingduran

Made 8 days after his death, this screen dance is for my dad, Mark “Marcos” Trejo Duran - who passed away at the age of 63 in his birthplace of Tucson Arizona on July 26, 2026.

I recruited a small team to help honor his memory the only way I could, while navigating the fog of shocking grief.

My dance making and performance is, and always has been, an embodiment of my love, my way of connecting and making peace with the violent world of the living.

And now I dance for the dead, for Mark, my dad who loved me with unconditional pride.

Mark was always proud of me, and everything I have achieved as a performing and teaching artist.

Where the sky meets ocean and land, I dance for the life and transition of my father, a major coordinate of my (un)spoken existence.

I dance to traverse Mark’s wrought gates of fire and metal that give passage to the spirit world.

I love you Dad. I still can’t believe you are gone.

“Catching Light 5/5”

What can it mean to catch the light? ☀️ it was a bit of a durational meditation over a couple weeks - observing (both passively and intentionally) the sunsets bath the trees and co-mingle with the haze from the valley below.

There is a tingle on my skin as I think back to my body in this environment…

While all of this footage was taken in a bit of a patient frenzy, on one afternoon, waiting for the sun to shift over 3 hours, it has provided me with much space for visual practice of dance footage over the last 3 weeks.

…it feels nice to complete this humble social media series. Thanks for watching!

“Catching Light 4/5” on a rocky path, from precarious movement to generating a kind of internal, energetic funnel -

after a few moments of finding my feet on the ground, I looked toward the sunlight and “caught” some of it to swirl through my body, while also negotiating these sharp rocks under my feet 🦶🏽

“Catching Light 2/5” on my 42nd birthday -

this video depicts a journey between light and shadow, between performing and producing, between allowing and creating.

I am approaching color, or

… arriving at the illumination of this vibrant pink miracle

I begin to dance, realizing that I can cover or reveal the throw of this sunset’s light onto this wildflower. Passive. Active. Versatile. Asexual. Spiritual. Presence. Flow. Time.

I’ve positioned the camera as specifically as possible.
