The Northern Red Muntjac was remarkably common and un-shy all across Khao Yai. Quite different from the Southern form I’ve seen at Taman Negara - must be all the people. Muntjacs or barking deer are a smaller, thicker species than the Sambar and are better adapted to forage in the forest and edges of grassland than the larger deer species which prefer more open habitats. #muntjac #wildlife #wildlifephotography #deer #khaoyaithailand #mammal taken in Khao Yai National Park- An Unesco-World Heritage Sites In Thailand by @movinn

Birds take dust baths for a bunch of reasons. Soaking up extra oil on their feathers or even to smother feather parasites. These Oriental Pied Hornbills were the biggest wild birds I’ve seen taking dust baths - it looks super luxurious, I was almost tempted to join in. Almost. Haha in any case a really interesting record of fascinating behaviour - I wonder where they do this here in SG. The Golden-crested Myna was one of our major targets in KY national park - in the end we got good views of one. A bit of a wacky looking bird for sure, but we were really glad to come to grips with it on our second last day at the park. So, the great thing about elephants is that they’re so smart and the most dangerous thing about them is that they’re so smart. Most elephants are peaceful and won’t bug people. But some elephants because of previous traumatic encounters with people (pro-tip: we started it, for some reason we’re always starting it) become aggressive when around us. This gorgeous man is Mr Juan, one of the elephants from Khao Yai. He has a name because he’s famous for being a bit of an A-hole - he came into the camping grounds thrashed an ice box and an empty tent, shoved a parked car, trumpeted and left. Rangers tried to stop him - he did not give a fuck. Couldn’t help but feel he knew he was messing with us. Khao Yai National Park treated us really well. After an arguably slow start - we racked up the likes of Indochinese jewels including Blue Pitta, Golden-crested Myna, Coral-billed Ground Cuckoo & the Eared Pitta. I don’t have many good bird photos/videos from here - but stay tuned for the ones I do! My highlights were having a male Eared Pitta hop onto a log barely a meter from me before freaking out and running away and having the ground cuckoo just run and pause in the middle of the road in front of our car! Of course in typical fashion these happened when I didn’t have a camera in my hands! The wing display of the Siamese Fireback is very amusing - rapid fire wing-flap that looks almost like a involuntary spasm. Fires are an important part of the ecology of dry forests. Historically, low-intensity fires were a natural component of the landscape and would play a key role in shaping the plant communities that grow here. Nowadays, controlled burns by rangers aim to mimic this process and keep the ecosystem healthy. The picture is a tree we saw with smouldering bark, that we came across while birding in Sab Sadao - flickering and smoking in the darkness; very atmospheric. The last video shows a much larger patch being burned, I’m not sure if this one is for forest management or for the clearance of land for farming - but the areas that had already been torched still had large trees standing so I’m leaning towards the former. by @movinn

Woodpeckers are major part of the avian assemblages of continental Southeast Asia’s dry forests. The Black-headed Woodpecker in particular is a generally low-density species that I’d missed before in northern Thailand - glad to pick it up here. From the salt pans of Pak Thale we drove up to the dry forests on the eastern part of Thailand. Well really @okamoto_keita_sin drove @yakshathefirst @hongs.photos and I were just being sitting around in the car being annoying - which we are skilled at :P These dry forests are home to a bunch of species not often seen in other parts of Thailand including the Common Woodshrike and White-browned Fantail featured on the tail end of this post. Also home to a rich assemblage of woodpeckers as y’all will see in later posts. Oh and we also managed a Small Asian Mongoose at the site!

The salt pans and mudflats of Pak Thale and Leam Pak Bia host some of the largest gatherings of shorebirds in this area of the world. A trip earlier in the year netted us some real crackers (Spoonie, Nordmanns greenshank, thousands of Great Knots). Really grateful to have been able to partake in this experience and tbh can’t wait to go back again. :) by @movinn

Soooo our second major target for the site was Nordmann’s Greenshank another very rare wader and looks somewhat similar to the more common Common Greenshank - ironically in the end we saw more Nordmann’s than Common GS at the place. But of course it took us till the last afternoon before we finally located them - we were half-resigned to having to come back for the bird. @okamoto_keita_sin and I even took a celebratory selfie (pro-tip scroll right to see, we r very cute 🥰).
