A responsible miner-to-market gemstone collaboration focused on the women artisanal gem miners in East Africa 💕

Nature doesn’t do copy-paste. 💜

Every one of these @moyogems amethyst crystals has its own shape, color, and character. (But they were all sourced rough from Mchoka in Tanzania.) And while we can imagine all the possibilities for what they might become, there’s something pretty special about them just as they are.

To cut or not to cut? That is the question. 💜

What would you choose?

So, how are things going with Moyo Gems? We’re so glad you asked. 💖

There’s been a lot of inspiring progress, and we want you to hear about it from the people who know it best.

Meet Norbert Massey and Esther Njunge, our in-country partners with PACT in Tanzania and Kenya. They work directly alongside miners participating in the Moyo program, bringing us updates straight from the communities at the heart of Moyo.

They’ll be joining us live (virtually) in Brooklyn this Friday at noon during the Ethical Gem Fair for a conversation about the program and its progress.

Can’t make it to Brooklyn? You can also hear from ANZA founder @idazzle at the Responsible Jewelry Conference in Chicago on Friday, October 23.

And if you can’t join us at either event, don’t worry. We’ll be sharing more updates here soon!

We’re excited to share these updates straight from the people who are there, working alongside miners and seeing the progress firsthand. 💖

Can an imperfect gem be the right gem?

We think so.

These two moonstones from our Moyo Chiang Mai Collection aren’t perfect. They have inclusions, texture, and plenty of little quirks. But that’s part of what makes them beautiful, and, to us, part of what makes them worth bringing into the world.

Because you can’t place an order with the earth.

You can choose the rough. You can choose the cutter. You can make thoughtful decisions about how a gem is shaped and brought to life. But ultimately, the material gets a vote.

And so do the people along the way - the miner who unearthed it (Salma and Omari I this case), the cutter who saw the possibility in it (the artisanal cutter in Chiang Mai for these), and everyone who helped it make its journey from the earth to your hands.

We don’t believe every gem needs to be flawless to be valuable. Sometimes its character is the whole point.

So we’re curious: can an imperfect gem be the right gem? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

Hello, August. 💚

There’s something especially fitting about welcoming a new month with a gem that’s this full of life.

This is our second August celebrating with @moyogems peridot from Tanzania, and we couldn’t be happier that these vibrant green gems found their way to our buyers’ table. After almost 10 years with 0 peridot, now we’re lucky enough to have a decent little stock including these beauties sourced rough front Hamza and Abdullah, then transformed into these striking shield cuts in Chiang Mai.

Truthfully? We didn’t always have a soft spot for peridot.

Not because it isn’t beautiful. We just hadn’t found our connection to it yet.

But then it came to us through @moyogems.

Now, when we look at a peridot, we don’t just see its vibrant green color. We see the miners who discovered it, the journey it took, and the skilled hands that brought it to life. Knowing where a gem begins has a way of changing how you see it. 💚

Here’s to August birthdays, bright green gems, and celebrating a birthstone that’s every bit as joyful as summer itself.

Happy birthday to all our August birthday friends! We hope your year sparkles! ✨💚✨

Sapphire, Sapphire, Ruby and Zircon by @moyogems

It’s all about the journey - the people and artistry along the way.

Swipe through to follow the story of this @moyogems sapphire cabochon, from rough crystal to finished pendant. Every pair of hands that touched it helped shape its journey, adding a new chapter along the way.

Now, transformed into a stunning pendant by the incredible @leighmaxwelljewelry, its story is still being written. The next chapter belongs to whoever wears it. ✨💜

A philosophy of imperfection:
Our visual world is saturated by the pursuit of perfection in beauty, technology and AI. There is an overlooked beauty in the imbalance of things, it is an imperfect balance formed by nature and framed by hand. We can see ourselves in these imperfections as we all are so are these stones, formed by nature and so perfectly imperfect.

This 8.14ct green sapphire is full of inclusions. Tiny landscapes shaped by nature over millions of years. Marks of time, pressure, and the unpredictable hand of the earth 🌍🐍🐢🦖

Collaboration with @renard.intaglio

I had been wanting to explore intaglio engraving for a long time. It’s a savoir-faire I deeply admire, the way it interacts with inclusions, depth and light, transforming the gem into something even more singular.

Thank @renard.intaglio for making it possible. by @moyogems
